The polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), a key component of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs), serves to conduct ions while preventing gas crossover and electron migration between the electrodes. Among fluorinated electrolyte membranes, Nafion® is the most widely used due to its excellent proton conductivity and durability. However, it has significant drawbacks, including environmental pollution during operation and high production costs. As alternatives, various hydrocarbon-based membranes are under development, but challenges remain in improving their performance and durability for practical PEMFC applications. The fabrication process of polymer membranes includes two critical steps: the drying step and the annealing step. Annealing is particularly
crucial for ensuring stable performance and durability of polymer membranes. While extensive research has focused on the effect of annealing on performance, studies on its impact on durability remain scarce. Furthermore, research applying annealing to hydrocarbon-based membranes to enhance both performance and durability is limited, with little attention paid to durability improvements in polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) applications. This study aims to determine the optimal annealing conditions by investigating the effects of annealing temperature on the performance and durability of fluorinated membranes. Subsequently, the optimized annealing conditions were applied to sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) membranes, a hydrocarbon-based alternative, for use in both PEMFC and PEMWE applications. Annealing was conducted at temperatures ranging from 125°C to 175°C for 15 minutes. The prepared polymer membranes were analyzed for their properties using hydrogen permeability and TGA/DTG measurements. Subsequently, SPEEK membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for fuel cells were fabricated and evaluated for durability under varying annealing durations using the Fenton test and the open-circuit voltage (OCV) holding method, an electrochemical accelerated durability evaluation approach recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The study also assessed the durability of SPEEK membranes applied to PEMWE under different annealing durations by operating them at 60°C with a constant current of 6.5 A. Results showed that thermal stability improved with increasing annealing temperature, while hydrogen permeability decreased, identifying 165°C as the optimal annealing temperature. Chemical durability, evaluated using the Fenton test, revealed a reduction in fluoride ion release rate as the annealing temperature increased from 125°C to 165°C. However, the release rate rose at 175°C, confirming 165°C as the optimal temperature for chemical durability. In PEMFC applications, annealed SPEEK membranes exhibited hydrogen permeability reduced to less than one-tenth of that of Nafion®, resulting in lower OCV. Reduced radical formation due to minimized hydrogen and oxygen crossover under PEMFC operating conditions enhanced the electrochemical durability of SPEEK membranes. This improvement indicates that hydrocarbon-based membranes can potentially replace fluorinated membranes in PEMFC applications. For PEMWE, initial performance as assessed by I-V polarization curves and durability after 24 hours showed the best results. SPEEK membranes annealed for 24 hours demonstrated over double the durability of those annealed for 12 hours, with minimal performance reduction. These findings emphasize the need for proper annealing to achieve an optimal balance between performance and durability
