The primary goal of an airline is to ensure the safety of passengers until reaching their destination. The safe operation of an airline directly has an impact on its reliability, and failure to ensure safety may result in serious casualties and financial damages due to accidents. Such incidents in the aviation industry lead to the establishment of policies regarding aviation safety. As a result, the management of each airline assumes responsibility for safety, and the management commitment become crucial factors determining the airline's safety performance. Therefore, it is essential for the management of each airline to assume responsibility and establish a proper safety policy within the organization to promote the safety performance of employees.
This study set up a research model based on the hypotheses of four validated variables: management commitment, work environment, communication, and safety performance. A survey was conducted among 255 employees of 'K' Airlines, a Full Service Carrier (FSC), and its subsidiary, 'J' Airlines, a Low-Cost Carrier (LCC). According to the results of the study, the management commitment was found to have no direct influence on employees' safety performance. However, they were found to indirectly influence safety performance by positively affecting the mediating variable of work environment. Additionally, the management commitment was found to have an impact on communication but did not significantly influence employees' safety performance.
Through this study, airline management can examine whether they are assuming the proper commitment, contributing to employees' safety performance, and fostering a safer organizational policy. It is hoped that this research will serve as a reference for each airline's management to evaluate whether they are assuming the appropriate commitment, and further contribute to securing the airline's safety and becoming an even safer aviation company.
