Fear of crime could effect on individual's life, it is impossible to overemphasize study of the subject. However much of previous studies on fear of crime is descriptive, there are some unsolved problems that define and measure of fear of crime among each person. Korea became a multi-cultural society, there are more variables affect fear of crime. Through increasing international students, many Universities in Korea has tried to invite more international students. Chinese students are the most largest rate in Korea. This study aims to understand effective factors on fear of crime among Chinese students in Korea.
The date used for this test were surveyed from 192 Chinese students who goes to universities in Seoul and Kyeong-gi area.
For this purpose, variable of the formal control consists of "experience of victimization", "cultural conflict", "language barrier" are configured.
The results of this study are as follows: In this study cultural conflict and language barrier are the most consistent and powerful effective factors on both property and violence crime. In this study, the factor of experience of victimization in Korea is remarkable because direct or indirect experience effect on fear of crime, and it gives negative images of Korea.
First, Women are considerably more afraid of property crime.
However Men are more afraid than women in violence. Other demographic characteristics-age, major, length of stay, living alone or not are non-significant on fear of property and violence crime. Men are more likely enjoy outdoor activities than women. There are chance of expose to violence crime, and it leads to increase fear of property crime.
Second, with regard the effect factors of fear of crime, both property and violence are influenced by cultural conflict. If the students feel discrimination or unfamiliar with Korean classmates or community members, fear of crime is raised.
Lastly, when Chinese students are having a difficulty with language barrier, fear of crime increases more than other factors. It is hard to live in foreign country and adopt other culture. Various programs should open to reduce fear of crime on those international students.
