The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between parents’ marital conflict and interpersonal competence of children and to verify the mediating effects influenced by parentification, shame-proneness, and co-dependency. The subject of this study has selected a total of 310 people including 145 male and 165 female college students in Gyeong-buk.
The research result is shown as follows.
First, the influence of parents’ marital conflict directly on the interpersonal competence is not statistically significant. However, the influence on the interpersonal competence in consequential linkage to parentification, shame-proneness, and co-dependency is statistically significant. Therefore, in the relationship of parents’ marital conflict and interpersonal competence of children, parentification, shame-proneness, and co-dependency are demonstrated to be perfect mediated model. Second, in the relationship of parents’ marital conflict and interpersonal competence of children, parentification is not shown to have statistical significance directly on the co-dependency. Third, in the relationship of parents‘ marital conflict and interpersonal competence, parentification has importance statically on the interpersonal competence.
The result of this study confirms that parents’ marital conflict has statistical significance in the relationship with interpersonal competence of children with the meaningful influence on parentification, shame-proneness, and co-dependency that it is the important variable to explain on the interpersonal competence of children in university. Through the foregoing, it has the implication to be facilitated as the empirical base data to search the detailed factor in the counseling scene for university students who display difficulties in relation to interpersonal competence.
