      ABSTRACT

      The Effects of Career Education Program on Career Maturity of the Students with Mild Mental Retardation

      The purpose of this study was to examine the necessity of the career education program for students with mild mental retardation which was still unsufficient and to provide basic materials for it, by evaluating and verifying the effects of the program on the career maturity of the students.
      The subjects of this study were 15 students in a test group and 15 in a controlled one from the special classes of the 6 public middle schools in D Metropolitan City. The career maturity was tested after applying the career education program to both groups.
      The study indicated as follows:
      First, to investigate the effects of the career education program on the career maturity of the students, the researcher tested their career attitude and capability after applying the program to both groups.
      In their attitude for career, the test group got the average 6.13 and the controlled one got the average 5.21, which shows a meaningful difference in the .05 level of signifcance(p<.01).
      Second, to investigate the effects of the career education program on the sub-areas(planning, disposition, compromise, and determination ones) of career attitude of the students, the researcher tested the sub-areas of their career attitude after applying the program to both groups.
      In the sub-areas of their attitude for career, there are meaningful differences in the .05 level of significance(p<.05) in the planning area (average 6.80 for the test group, and average 5.47 for the controlled one), the disposition area (average 5.53 for the test group, and average 4.60 for the controlled one), and the determination area (average 6.73 for the test group, and average 5.13 for the controlled one), while there is no meaningful difference in the statistical point in the compromise area (average 5.47 for the test group, and average 5.67 for the controlled one). This shows that the career education program has positive effects on the sub-areas(planning, disposition, and determinition ones) of the students' career attitude.
      Third, to investigate the effects of the career education program on the sub-areas(career-understanding, self-identity, career-choice, and decision-making ones) of career capability of the students, the researcher tested the sub-areas of their career capability after applying the program to both groups.
      In the sub-areas of their career capability, there are meaningful differences in the .01 level of significance(p<.01) in the career-understandin
      -g area (average 9.87 for the test group, and average 7.47 for the controlled one) and in the career-choice area (average 5.33 for the test group, and average 3.40 for the controlled one), while there are no meaningful differences in the statistical point in the self-identy area (average 1.53 for the test group, and average 0.64 for the controlled one) and in the decision-making area (average 0.87 for the test group, and average 0.80 for the controlled one). This shows that the career education program has positive effects on the sub-areas(career-understanding and career-choice ones) of the students' career capability.
