This study was able to define media art from the perspective of comprehensive art theory by examining and analyzing art theory and the transition of art media. Also, this study introduced necessary elements and technical aspects in terms of art work creation, by utilizing the preceding theoretical background and new media and by creating art works based on cutting-edge technology. Art theory has been studied from the artist and philosophical perspectives since the Middle Ages. The elements pursued by the comprehensive art theory they argued are that it should have a convergence form of each genre, communicate between the audience and the work, use tangible and intangible objets, and be able to utilize advanced technology.
Through the modern era, the avant-garde movement pursues “freedom of combination of genre” This refers to the elements of media art. It can be seen that media art is evolving along with science and technology as a general art and avant-garde movement for the public. Along with the development of AI, Internet of Things, smart technology, digital technology, and video technology, that of media art continues. Media art is expanding and evolving through advanced media such as digital art and hypermedia. Also, the coexistence of the artwork and the public in reality, as well as the communication with the public, is pursed by the production of media art. Therefore, it is proved that media art is a composite art evolving in present and future era.
In this study, the latest cases of using various objects were reviewed and the technical contents were analyzed. Currently, works using projection mapping technology are implemented in detailed and delicate graphics, and the standard of qualitative value of works is being improved. In terms of technology, projection mapping is being developed based on the use of various objets and cutting-edge science and technology. Considering the cases of 'Team Lab', 'Bunker of Light', and 'Arte Museum', programs and pictorial graphic elements that can convey the artist's intentions become part of the criteria for evaluating the value of an artist's work. As demonstrated through this study, when a work is implemented, how efficiently the interaction between the work and the audience is made can also be a criterion for evaluating the value of the work. The higher the degree of perfection, the more the audience participates and the higher the response and support of the public. In addition, when working with graphics in the implementation of projection mapping using video, laser, lighting, etc., it was proved by the case of this researcher's work that color, brightness, saturation, contrast, etc. should be considered according to the environment of the subject. To summarize the production stages of a work, the order of the production will be following: checking the space (environment) where the work will be realized, composing the story (content) of the work, analyzing or producing the nature of the subject (objet, sculpture), work realization technique, graphic production, digitization, test and realization.
In this study, the researcher used various methods and materials while producing three pieces of works. The first piece was projection mapping that creates an illusion effect using the characteristics of laser light. The artwork which expressed light in space and laser projection mapping on building follows a comprehensive art theory. By using historical buildings as objets, the historical meaning and messages of the buildings were expressed. It delivered the message for the new era by represening the historical events and the sorrow of the victims. However, the disadvantage of this work is being temporary and confined with particular places. The second piece was realized by installing threads in a cylindrical frame to form a rotating subject and through projection mapping and special lighting. It was the work that exploited projection mapping, lighting, and music on a thread objet sculpture, following a comprehensive art theory associated with using various media. This work, which contains the concept of ‘time’, guides the audience to the desired time as if a time machine does. The reviews of the audience says that they experience the time that they would like to experience through this artwork. These results can be said to reflect the intention of the work properly.
The third work utilized a 360-degree water screen as a special medium. It is a work that conveys the story of the ecosystem to the audience. The image mapped on the screen creates a scene similar to hologram based on the characteristics of water particles. Related to the work, this research clarifies the details about graphic production and suggests a method for improving the weakness of a water screen with low resolution and a method of how to appear/disappear the objet (appearance element) and a solution to the problem that the audience were disturbed by a strong light from the projector.
The work pursued by this researcher later is a realistic projection using a special medium. The artworks which can induce the transformation of space by exploiting the effect which can stimulate the receptive organs with interactive technology, lighting design, stage design, mechanical devices, performances, creative music, and sound effects are pursed, and those works will coexist with the public as a present and future art.
