송영주의 음악적 어법에 대한 연구 : 앨범 <Late Fall>을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

재즈는 연주자의 예술성과 즉흥 연주의 독창성, 듣는 이들에게 요구되는 음악적 지식 등으로 인해 다른 음악들에 비해 어려운 문화 활동으로 인식되는 장르이다. 그러나 재즈는 대중을 대상으로 하는 대중음악으로부터 시작되었으며, 최근 한국에서도 재즈 페스티벌이나 재즈 클럽과 같은 여러 형태로 재즈는 하나의 대중문화로 발전하고 있다. 이러한 점에 주목하여 본 논문은 재즈를 비롯한 여러 대중음악 장르에서 활발하게 활동 중인 송영주의 음악적 어법에 관해 연구하고자 한다. 송영주는 한국을 대표하는 재즈피아니스트로 14장의 음반을 발표하였으며, 한국과 뉴욕을 오가며 활발한 연주를 이어 나가고 있다. 그뿐만 아니라 K-pop과 크로스오버 장르에서도 작곡, 편곡, 연주로 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있으며 네 차례 한국대중음악상 수상하여 그 음악성을 인정받았다. 본 연구는 한국대중음악상을 수상하였으며, 한국 최초로 재즈 솔로 피아노 공연 실황을 담아 발표한 한국 재즈씬에서 의미 있는 앨범 <Late Fall> 중 다섯 곡을 선정하여 멜로디, 하모니, 리듬적 관점에서 분석하였다. 또한 키 센터가 명확하지 않은 곡에서는 베이스 라인의 움직임을 토대로 연구하였다. 연구를 통해 발견한 일곱 가지 음악적 어법을 아래에 서술한다.
첫째, 모티브 전개를 사용하여 테마 멜로디를 진행함으로써 반복을 통해 듣는 이들에게 메인 멜로디를 각인시켰다. 둘째, 페달 포인트를 사용함으로써 내성과 베이스 라인의 순차 진행을 만들어 다이나믹을 효과적으로 표현하였다. 셋째, 명확하지 않은 키 센터의 곡에서 베이스 라인을 순차 진행해 복잡한 화성을 부드럽게 연결되도록 하였다. 넷째, 패턴화된 화성 진행의 반복으로 곡 전체의 흐름에 통일감을 주었다. 다섯째, 오프 비트를 사용하여 만들어 낸 리듬감으로 속도감을 더해주거나 메인 멜로디를 강조하였다. 여섯째, 리듬의 가속과 감속을 통하여 다이나믹을 전개하고, 크로스 리듬과 폴리리듬으로 효과적인 다이나믹의 흐름을 만들었다. 일곱째, 새로운 화성 진행인 뱀프를 사용하여 즉흥 연주를 전개함으로써 더욱 매력적인 곡의 진행을 만들어 냈다.

이 논문을 통하여 확장 가능성이 무궁무진한 재즈의 어법을 토대로 변화 방향을 제시하여 다양한 음악 장르에서 발전을 위해 고민 중인 음악가들에게 도움이 되길 바란다. 또한 한국 재즈 뮤지션에 관한 지속적인 연구가 이루어지길 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Jazz is a specific genre which is recognized as complicated cultural activity to enjoy caused by the artistry, originality of improvisation and musical knowledge as required of the listeners these days. But jazz began with popular music for public and it’s still publicizing in various forms such as jazz festival and jazz club as a obvious pop culture in Korea recently. Based on the previous explanation, this thesis will contain musical phrases of Song Youngjoo who is performing in various popular music genres, including jazz.
She is a jazz pianist represents Korea and released 14 albums before. Also she has been performing between Korea and New York city. On top of that, she is performing a bunch of K-POP and crossover music as a composer, arranger and pianist and she won Korea Popular Music Awards as many as four times so she recognized for her musicality.
This research contains analyses of melody, harmony and rhythm in five songs of album called <Late Fall> which is a meaningful masterpiece in the Korean jazz scene released with live jazz solo piano performances for the first time in Korea and won the Korea Popular Music Awards. Also few songs consist of inexact key signature are analyzed with progress of bass lines. Musical phrases through this research are going to be described below.

Firstly, the songs imprinted the main melody with motive development on the listeners through repetition.
Secondly, the dynamic was effectively expressed by creating a sequential progression of inner parts and base performance with pedal point.
Thirdly, the bass lines are played with sequential progression in the songs consist of inexact key signature so it sounds very smooth.
Fourthly, patterned progresses of harmony make whole parts of the songs sound consistently.
Fifthly, a sense of rhythm from off-beat makes us to feel the songs little faster and also it emphasizes main melody.
Sixthly, through the acceleration and deceleration of the rhythm, dynamics of the songs was developed. And cross-rhythm and polyrhythm make the flow of dynamics of the songs very effectively.
Seventhly, it created a more attractive song progression by using a new harmony progression, vamp for improvisation.

For every musician struggling about various ways to develop on their own music or various genres of music by presenting the direction of change based on unlimited extensibility analysis of jazz, I hope this thesis could be great help. Also hope that study of Korean jazz musicians is going to be continue.
