To understand seasonal (winter and summer) variation of benthic foraminiferal assemblage around Ul-Ju coastal area, benthic foraminifera and grain-size analysis were performed at 52 surface sediments (benthic foraminifera: 14 locations) collected by van-Veen grab.
In Winter, average values of surface sediments were composed of sand(25.84%), silt(31.74%) and mud(42.47%). Sediment of study area consist mainly of mud facies.
Benthic foraminifera was classified into total 54 genera 103 species : agglutinated foraminifera 6 genera 9 species, calcareous hyaline foraminifera 46 genera 87 speices, calcareous porcelaneous foraminifera 2 genera 7 species.
The dominant benthic foraminifera species were Ammonia beccarii, Cibicides lobatulus, Nonionella globosa, Pararotalia nipponica and Pseudoparrella tamana. In the result of cluster analysis, benthic foraminifera assemblages are five assemblages as P. tamana assemblage, P.tamana-N.globosa assemblage, P.nipponica assemblage, P.nipponica-C.lobatulus assemblage, C.lobatulus-P.tamana assemblage.
In summer, average values of surface sediments were composed of sand(19.25%), silt(26.88%), mud(53.86%). Sediment of study area consist mainly of mud facies.
Benthic foraminifera was classified into total 49 genera 88 species : agglutinated foraminifera 7 genera 9 species, calcareous hyaline foraminifera 40 genera 73 speices, calcareous porcelaneous foraminifera 2 genera 6 species.
The dominant benthic foraminifera species were Pararotalia nipponica and Pseudoparrella tamana. In the result of cluster analysis, benthic foraminifera assemblages are composed of two assemblages as P.tamana assemblage and P.nipponica assemblage.
In the result of comparison of sedimentary facies in winter and summer shell facies appeared at many location in summer (eight locations) more than winter (one location). It may be due to the difference of wave strength in summer and winter. These seasonal difference of composition in surface sediment may be affected to the composition of benthic foraminifera.
In the result of comparison of benthic foraminifera assemblage in winter and summer, the difference of assemblage (N. globosa assemblage appeared only at winter) may be related with the difference of water temperature between winter(14℃ on average) and summer(21℃ on average).
Above mentioned, seasonal (winter and summer) variation of benthic foraminiferal assemblage around Ul-Ju coastal may be due to the difference of composition in surface sediment by wave and water temperature.
