벽화기법을 활용한 신선도 표현에 관한 연구

본 연구는 고려청자의 상감기법과 유약, 열팽창으로 인한 표면 군열이 주는 아름다움에서 모티브를 얻어 자연 소재인 흙벽의 균열을 신선도(神仙圖) 도상에 적용한 작품 제작과정을 탐구한 논고이다. 연구 대상은 ‘벽화, 신과 함께’라는 주제로 대학원 졸업 작품 평가를 위한 개인전(2022.12.21∼26, 동덕아트갤러리 A, B실)에 전시되었던 연구자의 작품을 중심으로 하였다.
신선도는 도교 신선사상의 주인공인 신선들을 시각적으로 표현한 그림으로 풍부한 스토리텔링과 개성적인 캐릭터로 우리 전통 회화에서 궁중회화와 민화를 망라해 매우 사랑받는 그림이었다. 의미적으로는 신선이 상징하는 내용처럼 장수(長壽), 혹은 장생(長生)에 대한 염원이 담겨 있다.
신선도는 현대에 와서도 ‘장수’가 지니는 보편적 가치에 힘입어 꾸준히 그려지고 있다. 다만 재료와 기법은 한지와 같은 종이에 분채 등의 전통 안료로 표현되는 것이 일반적이었다. 재료와 기법이 비교적 단조로웠다.
연구자는 이러한 점에 주목, 이제까지 시도되지 않았던 재료와 기법을 통해 신선도를 보다 새롭고 현대적으로 해석하고자 했다. 연구자가 주목한 새로운 재료는 흙 판이고 기법은 벽화 기법의 일종이다.
본 연구에서 신선도의 바탕재로 선택한 ‘흙 판’은 여러 시각예술에서 즐겨 사용되어 온 소재로, 특유의 질감과 균열을 만들 수 있는 매체이다. 흙 판이 건조되면서 생기는 균열의 아름다움을 신선도의 새로운 바탕재로 적용하여 한층 발전된 조형양식을 선보이고자 했다.
흙 판의 상감기법을 신선 도상에 적용, 새로운 조형 양식을 모색하는 과정을 통해 자연 소재의 개념과 미적 가치, 그리고 신선도와 벽화 의미와 역사를 함께 고찰하였다.
먼저 신선도에 대한 이해의 기본 전제로서 신선과 신선의 도상, 신선의 의미에 대하여 살펴보고 이어서 벽화의 표현 형식과 제작 기법을 소개하고 표현 방법을 정리하였다. 마지막으로 연구자의 작품 사례를 중심으로 벽화 제작에 적합한 표현 기법을 선정하고, 작품 제작의 과정과 주요 기법에 대하여 서술하였다.
각 작품은 조화, 복합 시공간의 만남, 길상, 벽사등의 메시지와 자연현상 및 형태에서 영감을 얻어 이를 연구자의 시선으로 재해석하였다. 신선도의 예술적 영역을 확장하고, 흙벽의 균열이라는 새로운 바탕재를 활용하는 연구가 신선도의 영역에 작지만 새로운 영토를 더하는 계기가 되길 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores the process of producing the picture of Taoist Immortals works by applying cracks in soil walls, inspired by the inlaid technique of Go-ryeo celadon, glaze and the beauty of surface cracks caused by thermal expansion. The study was focused with the works of a researcher who held an individual exhibition(2022.12.21∼26, Dong-Duk Art Gallery A/B) for the evaluation of graduate school graduation works under the theme of “The Mural, With the god”.
The Picture of Taoist Immortals (Xian [Chinese 仙/仚/僊; pinyin: xiān] refers to a person or similar entity having a long life or being immortal) is a painting that visually expresses the gods, the main characters of Taoist thought. And it is the theme that had been loved in Korean traditional paintings, including court paintings and folk paintings with rich story-telling and unique characters. It contains a desire for longevity or long life.
The Picture of Taoist Immortals has been steadily drawn in modern times thanks to the universal value of "long life." However, materials and techniques were generally expressed in traditional pigments such as “bunchae”on paper. The materials and techniques were relatively monotonous.
The researcher paid attention to this point and tried to interpret and create the picture of Taoist Immortals in a newer and more modern way through materials and techniques that have not been attempted so far.
The new material is “a clay plate”, and the technique is a kind of “the mural”.
The clay plate has been selected in various visual arts. Because it is the medium that can create unique textures and cracks. It was intended to present a more advanced formative style by applying the beauty of cracks caused by the drying process with the Picture of Taoist Immortals. The concept and aesthetic value of natural materials were considered together with the painting of Taoist Immortals, seeking a new formative style.
This study starts with the basic understanding about Taoist Immortals, followed by introducing the expression form and the production technique of the mural and the expression method. At last,
based on the case of the researcher's works, an expression technique suitable for mural production was explained. And the process and main techniques of production of the work were described.
Each work inspired by the natural phenomena, the forms, and the messages such as harmony, meeting with the combination of time and space, fortune-telling, Byeok-sa(defeating an evil spirit) were reinterpreted from the perspective of the researcher.
It is hoped that this research could expand the artistic area of the picture of Taoist Immortals. To utilize new materials such as murals and new expression ways such as cracks could provide an opportunity for adding small but new territory at the area of the picture of Taoist Immortals.
