This study is an analysis about narrative expression based on social considerarion at ‘extraordinary body’. Living with visual and intellctual disabiled sister, I’ve been experienced a position of social minorities. Even supporting my mother who is struggling against cancer and disabled sister, I’ve been agonized their being deeply.
Socially, one is young woman in her 20’s and the other is impaired and old woman. They are regarded ‘mother’ or ‘sister’ as ‘a woman’, ‘a disabled person’ or ‘a patient’ with extraordinary body. They are uncontrollable people requiring other’s help. In this condition, the question about value of ‘ordinary’ is important. ‘Ordinary’ is off the assessment of value; the word is chosen in moderate case and a buffer. Although ‘ordinary‘ is sometimes violence to somebody, it seems that there’s no problem in morals and politics because of being standardized downward. This word is treated as ‘normal’ and ‘general’ thus, people use around carelessly.
I recognize ‘extraordinary body’ as all existences that it cracks the meaning of ‘ordinary’. So, I thought revealing figures on canvas of my mother and sister who are treated as invisible or useless is a practice; cracking the meaning of ‘ordinary’.
I don’t exaggerate or glamorize them on pictures. They gaze calmly at audience with revealing their impaired bodies. Also, through the narrative of my family, I try to express ambivalence about the ‘family community’. I took crashing moment between personal desire and moral of caring, as living with them. Besides, I reflected that the family’s responsibility not only leads one’s life, but also it is sometimes huge weight of life.
Personal narrative is extended to social issue spontaneously. In this point of view, I found out the moment of social violence against minorities on ‘A passport photo rules’ and I worked on photo, video by contradictory system critics. It is banned the use of Adobe Photoshop on a passport photo rules. But to some impaired people, they can’t get passport photos without violating the rules. Not only can’t they be incorporated into the system with self-existence, they can’t even make personal ID.
There are lots of excluded beings living in society. However, they can’t still get recognition because of convenience of social control or prejudice. Moreover, the inequality and the exclusionary principle are still being established.
In future work, I’ll approach the social system from critical position in addition to visualizing my social attitude about ‘invisual people’ with extraordinary bodies and mentality.
Consequently, I’ll have questions at social for granted standard or belief. Expression of social criticism through my works bring changes public’s perception and social system.
