This study was conducted to investigate the water qualities of swimming pools in the area of Seoul city from 1992. 12. to 1993. 3. The 29 samples among 110 swimming pools in Seoul area were randomly selected and tested with Korean Standard for Water and Wastewater Examination Methods and U.S. Standard Methods for Examination of water and wastewater.
The results obtained at a given conditions are summarized as follows.
1. The pH values in the study ranged Iron 6.2 to 7 8 which were suitable to water quality criteria of swimming pool in the light of pH 5.6 to 8.6.
2. The most of measured turbidities were below 1 NTU, but 6 pools were between 1 and 2 NTU. The suspended solid could not be measured because they were broken down to colloidal form by chlorination and/or ozonation and passed through CF/C filter
3. The KMnO_(4) consumption, the concentration of T - N, T - P were very high. The law related to swimming pools regulate only KMnO_(4) consumption, The water environment might be optimal conditions for growth of saprophytic microbes or pathogenes if KMnO_(4) consumption, the concentration of T - N and T - P were high in the warm water temperature condition.
4. The residual chlorine form was inferred as a combined residual chlorine judging from the result of NH_(3)-N and NO_(3)-N measurement. Although the concentration of combined residual chlorine is 0.7 - 1 mg/L in case of chlorination and 0.5 - 0.7 mg/L in combined chlorination and ozonation in swimming pool water quality criteria, the concentration in the samples were 0.4 - 0.6 mg/L, 0.1 - 0.4 mg/L respectively and those values were not reached at the criteria.
5. The heterotrophic microbes and pseudomonas were found at 5 and 9 samples respectively. The coliform group was found at 2 samples, but fecal coliform was not found and inferred all samples were not contaminated with feces.
6. Our bacteriological test in the standards impose to test heterotrophic microbes and coliform group only, but such criteria do not represent strong pathogenes or infectious viruses in resistance. Therefore it is desirable to establish more reliable bacteriological indicators.
