The purpose of this study was to make comparative research on the effects of a safety climate, job stress, and a safety Consciousness on the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders at small manufacturing sites and a site with at least 100 employees.
Research was conducted in 159 persons at small manufacturing sites and 143 at a site with ≥100 employees within the jurisdiction of the branch office in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province (Seongnam, Gwangju, Yeoju, Icheon, and Yangpyeong) during the delegation to the private sector from March 1 to November 30, 2018; at the small sites, a survey was conducted through personal interview with elderly persons having difficulty in reading, and both interview and a survey were conducted in the other participants by distributing questionnaires. The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, as for the general characteristics, the employees at small sites (9.4%) were relatively less likely to be aware of musculoskeletal risk factor analysis than those at the site with ≥100 employees (58%), showing a significant gap. That is, the employees at the large site have a better understanding of risk factor analysis than those at the small sites.
Second, the respondents at the small sites with >50 employees and those at the site with ≥100 employees scored 3.46 and 3.64, respectively, for a safety climate and 2.24 and 2.10, respectively, for job stress, showing a gap by the size of manufacturing. That is, the smaller a site was, the poorer environment it had.
Third, the employees having musculoskeletal symptoms (3.35) scored lower for a safety Consciousness than those having no musculoskeletal symptom (3.55) at small manufacturing sites, showing significant differences. That is, it has been confirmed that workers with musculoskeletal symptoms have a poorer safety Consciousness than those with no musculoskeletal symptom at small sites.
Fourth, the employees at the small manufacturing sites showed significant differences in the organizational system, job demand, relational conflicts, and inappropriate reward among the sub-factors for job stress. That is, it has been confirmed that job stress affects musculoskeletal disorders.
Fifth, a poor safety climate at the small manufacturing sites made great contributions to the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders, with significant differences in the safety climate, procedure, and attitude. That is, it has been confirmed that these variables contribute to the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders.
To put these results together, the workers at the manufacturing sites with <50 employees showed relatively lower levels of a safety climate and job stress than those at the site with ≥100 employees; those having a better safety Consciousness in a better safety climate showed lower levels of musculoskeletal disorders; and the higher level of job stress, the more likely to complain of perceived symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders.
Although musculoskeletal disorder is the most frequent type of disease disaster among employees at small manufacturing sites, no domestic research other than The Perceived Symptoms of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Relevant Factors in Male Employees at Small Manufacturing Sites (Lee, Lee, and Cho)—an article published in 2012—has been found; thus, there is almost no research in employees at small manufacturing sites with ≤50 employees.
Therefore, this study intended to determine the level of exposure to musculoskeletal disorders in employees at small manufacturing sites in Gwangju, Seongnam, Yeoju, and Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. This study is significant in that it has determined the effects of three variables—job stress, a safety Consciousness, and a safety climate—on musculoskeletal disorders at different angles. The results of this study are expected to be useful as data controllable in the area of safety culture with the objective of preventing musculoskeletal disorders at small manufacturing sites, which involve a lot of disasters.
