Sohawjang built in 1944 is the Busan’s first apartment housing. So far it is very rarely that an apartment of Japanese colonial era exists in Korea and Sohawjang has a highly significant historical and residential meaning as an modern apartment. But there is no any historical record about Sowhajang, and it is now deteriorated and seriously damaged. This study examines introduction process of an apartment in Korea and historical background of Busan and clarifies construction background of Sohawjang through related documents. To figure out the utilization situations of current housing Sohawjang being at risk of destruction, this study carried out the experimental research and a survey with questionnaires as well. This study analyzed an real state of transformation and derived characteristics based on present conditions of Sohawjang recorded through field research. Especially, because other countries entrant lived as an historical background, it derived transformation characteristics of residential space owing to dwelling culture differences. Also, it presumed original form at the vantage point of the present by combining face-to-face survey contents and traces of original form from present conditions of Sohawjang based on historical background and architectural characteristics. This study attempts to offer basic data about studies on apartment introduction and transformation process in Korea and examines the value of Sohawjang as a modern residential historic dimension. And it looks forward to having a revaluation of Sohawjang’s historical value, a modern apartment, which has not revealed yet.
