      In this dissertation, I have inquired into the causes of nihilism of style forms and stories, one of the features of HARUKI's pieces of work. As looking into HARUKI's growth process, the influences of the American literature- lost generation literature- that he read in his youth, and the influences of Japanese disordered period in the 1970s, I can understand his color of nihilism. And having bound up his three pieces of early work, 『Listen to the song of wind』,『The pinball in 1973』,『The sheep surrounded by adventure』, and 『Dance Dance Dance』which was written after 6 years into four series, I have examined them focusing on those changed aspects.
      As being written continuously, the 3 series have similarities in those atmosphere and messages that the author put in the works. But on 『Dance Dance Dance』, the completed copy, there are distinctive features on such aspects. The early 3 series picture the hero( I )'s life story in his twenties when the ideologies were muddled. And those have the anguish and the solitude of the rising generation ,who were in college or wandered since then, as their main theme. Also I have seen the situations that the hero, who had been frustrated by the society and human relations in such era, segregated himself from the outside. Contrary to these works, on 『Dance Dance Dance』, in high capitalistic society the hero realizes his desire that couldn't be achieved in the past. On this work, differently from the 3 series, I can see his changed attitude for connecting with the exterior and the process of being connected to the outside by uniting with the woman he has wanted.
      The 4 series have the unique techniques styled 'Seek and Find' in common and include the process of which 'I' 'seek and find' 'the reason for being'. On the 3 series, the hero cannot find 'the reason for being' that he lost after Naoko's death. But on 『Dance Dance Dance』, he has found it joining with a woman called Youmiyosi. To examine the flows from severance to connection on such 4 series, I have studied by considering it as 'this world' that is a place of a state in severance and 'that world' which is a place of being connected. On 『Dance Dance Dance』, the hero tries to accomplish the communication, which was possible only in this world, in that world as well. At that point the mediums, which connect the two worlds with each others, are 'well' and 'elevator'. And there is 'sex' as the medium of an act.
      Through the 4 series, HARUKI has recalled his youth and the things that he lost then, and he has opened his own closed mind. On 『Dance Dance Dance』, it has been completed that he had made every effort through the 3 series. I would have a problem awaiting solution as the study about what kinds of characters HARUKI's novels, which were published after this 4 series, possess.
