Although social media platforms enable networks of individuals and groups to exchange information widely and rapidly, the spread of disinformation on social media has become a major issue. As the scope of this discussion has expanded, the relative lack of empirical studies on methods to prevent the spread of disinformation among social media users has highlighted a need for further research.
Accordingly, in this study, we present a theoretical review of some relevant cases and of the literature on disinformation and information panels. An experiment was also conducted on factors affecting the acceptance of disinformation in video content by social media users. Five types of videos were considered, including (A) video content without information panels, (B) with information panels providing related sources, but without a link to an online source, (C) with information panels providing related sources, (D) with information panels providing the results of an online search, and (E) with information panels providing the results of fact-checking services. Five hundred participants were involved, aged 20 years and above.
The results showed that type (E) exhibited a significant difference in credibility (p<.001). In contrast, no significant difference was found among all five types in terms of their likelihood of confirmation by additional information. However, types (D) and (E) showed a significant difference in terms of transmissibility (p<.001). Notably, a significant difference in service credibility was found for all four types that provided an information panel compared to videos that did not (p<.001).
We sought to identify the accepting attitude of a user when connecting to information that can be fact-checked using graphic elements such as text and buttons from the user’s experience. We found significant results to help users identify disinformation provided by various contemporary media outlets. Detailed results are as follows: the credibility differed significantly on information panel providing the results of fact-checking services (E). The transmissibility differed significantly on information panels providing the results of an online search (D) and information panel providing the results of fact-checking services (E). The service credibility differed significantly in all information panel types (B~E). The differences between acceptance of disinformation were empirically analyzed according to information panel types. This study is significant as it outputs the results crucial to using information panels for positive information verification.
