This study aims to establish right Art Career education for high school students who are going to enter into a college of fine arts.
For this goal, questionnaires among fine arts university students were implemented to verify “How identity formation of high school students and major satisfaction influence in career selection”.
<Analysis on respondents>
1. Population of sociological factors in respondents
2. Identity formation in high school
3. Identity formation by major satisfaction in university
4. Opinions of university students
5. Correlation with identity change
The subjects of this study were 159 university students(87 students in Chung-Ang university and 72 students in Hong-Ik univerisity). Male students were 33(28 in CAU and 5 in HIU), and female students were 126(59 in CAU and 67 in HIU). Among them, 157 questionnaires except for two which were insufficient for the study (2 in HIU and 0 in CAU) were utilized.
In this study, the instruments which are “Anlaysis of population of sociological factors”, “Ego-identity”(Eun-mi Kim, 2012), and “Major satisfaction”(Won-suk cho, 2009) were used to measure variables.
The result of verifying study hypothesis are below:
1) After analyzing 7 population of sociological factors, it firstly shows that female students are absolutely more than male students. Secondly, among fine arts university students, many of them were from metropolises, and students from medium-sized cities or agricultural villages were few. That is, the equal education opportunity, which is the fundamental right of people, is accomplished differently according to cities and areas. Thirdly, the number of students who stay out of school temporarily increases in higher grades. The reason was that they chose to take a rest due to frustration caused by a wrong major choice and job hunting. Fourthly, according to the question of high school departments, while the expectation was that fine arts high school students had more opportunities to experience aesthetic activities in their school life, they had almost same education compared to general high school students except that the identity formation and major satisfaction were a little higher. Nevertheless, the reason of the high ratio in fine arts related school entrance is that the fine arts high school entrance is another merit to enter into a college of fine arts. Fifthly, the number of poor students who cannot have an expensive private tutor, which is essential to enter into a fine arts college nowadays, are naturally less in the university. Sixthly, the question that the most influential standard when selecting a major was one’s grade which means that students follow the level of their grade and a major department in choosing a major. In this point, the standard of major selection between Chung-Ang and Hong-Ik university was different, and it was caused by the different admission process. Moreover, the newly known fact through this admission process was that the cut line of Korean SAT was higher when the name of the university major department changed. Namely, high school students choose their major by just seeing the name value of the major, not considering the specific curriculum or their aptitude. Seventh, the most period when choosing fine arts major was the early high school. That is, the high school period is extremely important for those who want to enter into a college of fine arts, and it is significant to improve the quality of high school fine arts classes for students’ future.
2) According to the result of the identity formation in high school, most of the identity formation was accomplished in high school compared to the major satisfaction. One of the reason is that most of the high school students’ aim is to enter into a good department in brand name universities. The subjects of this questionnaires were in Chung-Ang and Hong-Ik university where artistic departments strengthen, so it is natural that the identity is highly measured. However, as it is shown in the result of questionnaires, students do not choose their major and future career regarding their aptitude, interest, and sense of values, but they are terribly afraid of entrance competition where there is little career counseling and identity building. Also, the result shows that the school’s role and status as public education institution falls while subjects which are not much related to the university entrance such as athletic and artistic subject decrease due to the increased private education market. Therefore, students who are in those period do not seem to experience right identification formation.
3) According to the result of major satisfaction, social recognition of the major and the name value of university affect Korean university students the most. It means that major satisfaction is correlated to the university satisfaction, so when developing career counseling programs, the study for reducing negative effects on the lower level university is necessary. For example, this case also shows that the name value of the university is satisfied while the major satisfaction is not fulfilled.
To summarize, due to the present educational problem caused by the outcome-oriented society, Korean students do not consider their future career and specific university curriculum, but spend their precious time and money in the unsatisfied major.
Throughout the questionnaires, the study provides clear evidence that career education and counseling is essential for the identity building of those who want to enter into a college of fine arts. In addition, the education for one’s ego-identity establishment to find one’s value and meaning of existence is also necessary.
