This study aims to analyze the types of make-up image and their design element throughout the period from 2010 F/W to 2012 S/S fashion shows. Five respective brands were selected for the purpose of the study, drawing comparisons in seasonal trends of types of make-up image and design in fashion shows held by each of the brands selected.
The scope of study ranges from Paris, London, Milan to New York fashion collections, all of which were four main worldwide fashion collections between 2010 F/W and 2012 S/S.
The study includes the followings:
Throughout this period, Purism Natural Image Make-up, Decadent Image Make-up, Retro Image Make-up and Chic Smoky Image Make-up were observed in all four major collections.
The types of image make-up, design elements and relevant techniques include:
First, Purism Natural Image Make-up seemed natural but created quite a difficult image.
Second, Decadent Image Make-up, overall, created a highly decadent, depressed and inhumane image; it was therefore considered a challenging and unique make-up technique.
Third, retro characters and sensual image, similar to what can be seen in some Hollywood female stars, were found in Retro Image Make-up. Due to its vivid colors, Retro Image Make-up seemed vivacious and unique.
Fourth, Chic Smoky Image Make-up is characterized as refined, intelligent and cosmo. It mainly uses a color toned down and other simple and understated colors to highlight eyes black and to express the entire image as darker and more attractive.
The study categorized make-up images and design from fashions shows held by Chanel, John Galliano, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander Mcqueen, drawing seasonal comparisons for the period between 2010 F/W and 2012 S/S. The results are as follows.
First, between 2010 F/W and 2011 F/W season the cosmetic brands owned by Chanel and Dior displayed relatively similar trends and John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier were also found to experience the same. The former group of brands has gone from Retro, Retro to Chic Smoky; the latter group’s trends moved from Decadent, Decadent to Retro. On the contrary, Alexander Mcqueen displayed no change in trends across the seasons but it held onto Purism Natural Make-up between 2010 F/W and 2012 S/S.
Second, the mainstream type of make-up images adopted between 2010 F/W and 2011 S/S season were a decadent and retro image and especially by 2011 F/W season, it was Chic Smoky and Retro replaced the popularity of Decadent. 2012 S/S season, however, saw an emerging trend in make-up images, dominated by Purism Natural and Retro Image Make-up. As for the overall trends, it can be described as Decadent, Retro -> Chic Smoky, Retro -> Purism Natural, Retro, suggesting the make-up image trends have slowly shifted from Retro to Purism Natural, which creates a natural rather than colorful image.
Third, differing trends in make-up images were observed as designers from each examined brand were replaced.
The study can be used as a foundation for comprehending fashion show make-up trends in the field of cosmetics by analysing types of make-up and design element.
