This Study defines individuals and groups from sociological point of view. The research works are based on Vitor Turner’s 'Communitas' theory. The works are made by conceptualizing and shaping social phenomena based on the theory.
The researcher viewed and interpreted society from a perspective based on the theory of Communitas. In the theory, a society is a group having free movement tendency. Communitas theory is a theory that can logically explain this researcher's point of view. The theory shows us a world that is ideal but not lasting. There is an example like some festivals in modern society. Festival is a time and space where you can enjoy your freedom to the fullest for a short time forgetting your everyday life. The researcher produced the <Distinction without Difference> and <COMMUNITAS> series, which are virtualizing the state of the temporary ideal world with images. Moreover, three researcher’s words were presented based on the Communitas theory. First, individuals appearing in all research works were conceptualized and embodied as individuals called 'UM'. Based on this, the <UMWELT> series was produced. It has the same point with the concept of Jacob von Wicksquill's Umwelt. Second, referring to 'Under Communitas', two images of the group, before and after reaching Communitas, were virtualized. People in the Under Communitas seem indiscriminately tangled without purpose or rules. This state seems irregular, but a series of rules could be found in the process where individuals having free will gather and form some groups to make purposes. these movements were described as 'blank movements' as the third word. Individuals can be seen as a fierce movement itself to finding their new goal in an empty space where no purpose or abnormality exists. Then, the researcher created a diagram. Using the diagram, the researcher explained how the individuals make our societies look like and what characteristics they represent. Then, contrary to the temporality, which is the biggest characteristic of Communitas, the researcher showed how society in daily time can be conceptualized and virtualized through knotting methods. Using the existing knot methods in our world, we can make images of the form in which communities are constructed according to the purposes and intentions. Then, we can explain that modern social structures are closer to horizontal and parallel structures than vertical ones. Knot groups that exist individual knot groups are interactive. They can move between groups. It means they are ones who pursue the individual purposes and ideal worlds and get there through the movements. In the work modeling the knot groups, there are shapes of the knots and UM objects around it. UM individuals correspond to strangers wandering around people in our society, and also mean mediums themselves that make the groups become stronger or broken up. They can make it possible. The concept can be explained more easily by visualizing the structures of human groups such as society, group and community that existed but weren’t seen as an image before. The knot methods are still being created depending on their uses. Combined and scattered, they change the shapes. As we can see, repeating a series of process, our society will be structured in more complex and various shapes in future.
The <COMMUNITAS>, <UNDER COMMUNITAS>, and <HITCH, KNOT, FRICTION> series can be seen to virtualize various forms of UMWELT groups, which exists quantitatively and can be conceptualized. The ‘Communitas’ represents the peak roll of individuals in society, and the ‘under Communitas’ specifically means stages of the energy exhausted or saving and the ‘knots’ are visualized to express the usual groups in daily life. In conclusion, this paper is an analysis that defines the concept of communities and knots and visualizes the images. It aims to structure our society following the stages of mental conditions that individuals feel like. Also it aims to visualizing the forms of each stage by using ‘knot methods’. Through this thesis, previous works having been explored about social phenomena can be stand on the more obvious foundation. Then It will be the basis for later artwork activities.
