The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12 week’s combined exercise and nutrition education on health-related fitness and metabolic syndrome in breast cancer patients.
The subjects for the study were twenty-seven breast cancer patients composed of the combined exercise with nutrition education group(A, n=9), the combined exercise group(B, n=9), the control group(C, n=9) that have not participated in any specific exercise regularly.
The variables of health-related fitness and metabolic syndrome were measured in all the subjects before the start of the exercise program and after the end of 12-week combined exercise.
The period of combined exercise was 12 weeks, 3 times a week and each time 60 minutes with intensity of RPE and used to measuring the change in heart rate with Polar and nutrition education was conducted 30 minutes one day per week. The results of this study are as follows:
1. Effects on Health-related Fitness
1) The cardiorespiratory endurance in A and B have significantly increased.
2) The strength in A group increased significantly than it did in C group. The muscular endurance B group increased significantly than it did in C group.
3) The flexibility in A and B groups have increased significantly than it did in C group.
4) The body fat percentage in A and B groups have significantly decreased and the body fat percentage in A group significantly decreased than it did in C group.
5) The muscle mass in A and B groups have significantly increased and the muscle mass in A group significantly increased than it did in C group.
6) The WHR in A group have significantly decreased and the WHR in A and B groups have significantly decreased than it did in C group.
2. Metabolic Syndrome
1) The TG in A and B groups have significantly decreased than it did in C group.
2) The HDL-C in A and B groups have significantly increased than it did in C group.
3) The DBP in A group decreased significantly.
4) The WC A and B groups have significantly decreased than it did in C group.
According to the results of this study, combined exercise and nutrition education for breast cancer patients was effective in improving the several variables of health-related fitness and metabolic syndrome.
Obesity is associated with the breast cancer rate, Combined exercise and nutrition education which increase the consumption of calories and insulin sensitivity can improve the metabolic syndrome.
Diet, regular physical activity, and exercise after surgery for breast cancer with long-term health care will have a positive effect on relapse prevention. The research for the relationship between cancer and immune system needs to be continued for the further study.
