The steam turbine rotor has the special geometry that can not be clamped by general center tool on the tail stock of lathe. The 50 ton weight must be sustained by head stock and hydrostatic steady rest.
In this study, the operation conditions and side quill angle of hydrostatic pads for machining stainless steel turbine rotors were decided by the experiment in large horizontal lathes.
The required pump pressure was 3 MPa and outflow rate was 15 cm3/s to maintain 10 ㎛ gap between the journal of steam turbine rotor and the hydrostatic surface of steady rest. The angle of the side quill should be 80 °in order to reduce vibration to 0.05 mm when the groove width is 15 mm and spindle speed is 30 rpm.
