As the aftermath of economic recession spreads all around the world, unemployment crisis is becoming a common phenomenon in every country. Now, a solution to unemployment problems emerges as a national task rather than a personal one, of which the importance is growing as time goes by. To solve unemployment problems, development in national economy should be undoubtedly preceded.
At the same time, it also requires systematic education to enhance employment rate by actively coaching job-seekers for their career direction and occupation and to help them feel satisfied with their everyday life by choosing work that fits them. Even though employment is important in itself, it is also of great importance to live a worthwhile and meaningful life by finding a job that corresponds with one's aptitude, interest and talent.
Early discovery of and preparation for such a job would be the ideal choice of career. However, it is not easy to grasp one's aptitude at an early stage. In particular, self-reporting psychological tests and aptitude tests can hardly be taken by children nor illiterates, show different results in accordance with one's feelings, and have weakness of being insincerely or untruthfully answered sometimes.
A perception of natural innate aptitude would compensate such a defect of psychological and aptitude tests. Although there are ways like phrenology, chiromancy and dactylography to judge vocational aptitude which are not self-reporting, the most common and generalized way is "Myungri"(命理)-theory.
This is because one's fate and vocational aptitude can be grasped by only the time and date of birth to some extent. Furthermore, if the "Four Pillars"(四柱) and "Eight Characters"(八字) are considered to be fatefully given, they can be accepted as undeniable calling rather than as one of much information possibly used for reference so that an individual can be willing to be engaged in the work more enthusiastically.
Some people, who have certificates for MBTI psychological test and for strong interest inventory, also study "Myungri"-theory becausae its views on personality and vocational aptitude are necessary for consultation.
In other words, a consultation based on science of divination feels like touching one's heart and captivating one's spirit. Therefore, a number of people are trying to have psychological and vocational counselling mainly with science of divination, making subsidiary use of western tests.
When it comes to vocational counselling and guidance, linguistic persuasive power of "Myungri"-counselling can make a contribution to enhancing self-efficacy and confidence in one's career. In addition to its contribution to psychological aspect in career counselling, "Myungri"-counselling should also be able to gain confidence in a practical aspect.
It is, so to speak, because a counselee's self-efficacy can persist only if an analysis based on "Myungri"-theory corresponds to a real situation and its prediction comes true. According to the survey results of this research, 76.11 percent of respondents said yes to a question "Do you believe that a man has his innate destiny or aptitude?" and 72.57 percent to a question "If you know the vocational aptitude of your "Four Pillars", would you take it into consideration in your choice of career?" It eventually means that 72.57 percent of the respondents believe in the "Four Pillars" and would consider a relevant advice when making a choice of career.
It shows a high possibility of "Myungri"-theory complementary to career counselling. This study looked into the existing theories of guidance for career direction; the influence of "Myungri"-theory's historic status and its idea of innate aptitude on self-efficacy; "Myungri"-theory's views on vocational aptitude by going over theories of "Yin and Yang"(陰陽), "Five Elements"(五行), "Ten Stars"(十星), "Gyukguk"(格局) and "Yongshin"(用神) in turn; comparisons between the existing theories of guidance for career direction and views on vocational aptitude of "Myungri"-theory. Subsequently, we carried out frequency analysis in order to find out whether the views on vocational aptitude of "Myungri"-theory coincide with a reality or not, by collecting information on the "Four Pillars" of 155 people, who have a medical profession such as doctors and oriental doctors, and 251 people with an educational profession including teachers and professors.
To this end, we tried to set up "Myungri"-hypothesis about the "Four Pillars" structure of the two group respectively, and to prove them by means of frequency analysis.
As a result, in case of those in medical industry, 140 doctors(90.32%) out of 155 turned out to have the "Four Pillars" structure that can lead to a doctor, while, in case of people in educational industry, 172 educators(85.57%) out of 201 proved to have such a structure that can result in an educator.
Therefore, the study shows that "Myungri"-theory has an actual effect with very high accuracy rate in a practical aspect as well as an psychological effect by help counselees enhance their self-efficacy in the course of vocational counselling and guidance.
Consequently, we could come to a conclusion that there is a good possibility of "Myungri"-theory complementary to vocational guidance.
The study has a significant meaning in that it did not verify only the chance of acknowledging the predictive power of "Myungri"-theory, but also the complementary possibility of "Myungri"-theory to a guidance for career direction and occupation through a statistical analysis. From now on, even more studies should be conducted on the influence of one's "Four Pillars" on an occupational choice, by using a variety of methods and data.
In order for "Myungri"-theory to be of help to a guidance for career direction, more theoretical studies and empirical researches on this field should be carried out in the future. In addition, a consideration for "Myungri"-theory in career counselling needs to go beyond a personal level so that experts in "Myungri"-theory will be able to institutionally become official career counsellors from my perspective. If we can apply the virtues of precious traditional culture to a career guidance, and then make a resultant contribution to personal and national development by doing so, it would be a task of great significance.
