The internationalization of higher education has made studying and living abroad a fast growing worldwide phenomenon. Study abroad necessitates living abroad, experiencing different way of life, changing one’s way of thinking as well as acting in daily life. In recent years, the number of international students studying at Korean universities has been increasing considerably. Intercultural communication, communication between people from different cultures, has become an important part of life with increasing internationalization and globalization. Keeping this in mind, studying and living in KOREATECH University has become the study area of research from intercultural communication perspective.
The study focused on how international students understand Korean culture and society while studying and living in KOREATECH University. Furthermore, this study commenced with research questions consisting of a) How did international students experience when they interact with Korean culture and society while studying and living in KOREATECH? This also includes what difficulties did they face in new cultural and academic environment? And how did they adjust themselves in new cultural environment when they do not share the same culture?
The study employed a qualitative approach, using grounded theory as a framework and methodology. Grounded theory is recognized as one of the major qualitative research approaches which makes possible to know about what is going on or happening or what is local reality in or around an event.
This study employed semi-structured interview method which is powerful tool for data collection for qualitative research. Nine participants were selected by applying the purposive network sampling method among those international students who were studying in KOREATECH University on 2013 and staying in Korea more than one year. Among nine students, four students were studying at undergraduate level and five were graduate students. The interviews were conducted in English and all interviews were audio recorded by using smart phone. After gathering raw data, the open coding method was used to develop categories, subcategories and codes then axial coding was used for making connections among broad categories as a conceptual framework or model.
The findings of the study provided four broad categories, twenty eight sub-categories and sixty four codes. Furthermore, academic life provides the context or intercultural communication fields where intercultural communication barrier, intercultural understanding, intercultural communication skill development and adjustment in new cultural environment were making connections to each other on the basis of cause and effect-relationship in sequential order which is the main conceptual framework or model of the study.
