As various forms of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam enter into dialogue with their own multiple forms and with one another, new structures are needed to identify what beliefs are essential and central to one's own subtradition and tradition and how these may best be articulated and then related to the traditions of others. The Jaina model of flexible fundamentalism offers one option for validating a fundamentalist devotion to basic teachings while still acknowledging the validity of divergent views within their own context.
