In this study, MgO and AlN were added as sintering additives into silicon nitride. Density, hardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, flexural strength and thermal conductivity were measured. Densified silicon nitrides, which have over 99% relative density, were obtained. It was found that the mechanical properties are depending on contents of AlN and sintering methods. We focus our attention on the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical/thermal properties of silicon nitride including AlN additives.
