1. Purpose : Identification of genes for analysis of host susceptibility and development of biomarkers for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of NTM pulmonary disease patients in Korea, as well as clinical application of identified candidates as biomarkers
2. Contents : The present study will be performed following two steps
(1) First year (Fundamental and Identifying study)
① Collection of clinical isolates and materials: Isolation of cell and serum from NTM patients.
② Serological analysis of NTM patients depends on NTM species (M. avium, M. intracellulare, M. abscessus, or M. massiliense) and disease form (upper lobe cavitary or nodular bronchiectatic form).
(2) Second year (Application study)
① Genetic analysis of host via cell model of patient: Investigation of the pattern of gene, expression in B lymphocytes from patients stimulated with culture filtrate antigen for the identification of host-specific factors in NTM patients
② Study on the formulation of NTM diseases and its prognosis: Establishment of NTM disease algorithm which predicts the progress of disease in accordance with the NTM strains and host immunity or genetic environments
3. Expected Contribution
(1) Suggestion of clinical standards and establishment of new technology on the regulation of NTM pulmonary disease
(2) Understanding of the mechanism underlying infectious diseases including tuberculosis and development of therapeutics
(3) Ehancement of nation's status by leading study of NTM pulmonary diseases
(4) Prevention of misuse of medicines and therapeutics by suggestion of clinical standards on NTM pulmonary disease
(5) Contribution to nurturing of high value-added biotechnology industries by advancement of technology
