Within the framework of a broadly defined notion of teaching methodology, this paper discusses several approaches to foreign language teaching relevant to the teaching of practical English at Korean universities Focusing on the need to provide the students with sufficient English input from contextualized language use, we propose the merit of integrating the teaching of four language skills from the perspective of integrated approaches geared toward making input comprehensible to the students. Content-based instruction, in particular, is suggested as a potentially valuable approach to college English education. Also discussed is the need for cross-cultural research of communicative patterns that can provide a theoretical basis for the practice of enhancing communicative competence Suggestions are made for the value of consciousness-raising activities that lead students to a deeper understanding of socio-cultural patterns of English language use
