Monolithic alumina and alumina-5 vol.% SiC nanocomposite were hot pressed and the worn surfaces were investigated by SEM and TEM. Monolithic alumina was observed dislocation layers inside single grains along the sliding direction. however alumina-silicon carbide nanocomposite showed the interference of dislocations with silicon carbide particles in alumina matrix grains. Also, alumina-silicon carbide nanocomposite shows more wear resistance due to microcrack pinning by nanosized silicon carbide particles.
