In this study, MgO and AIN were added as sintering additives into silicon nitride. Silicon nitride with various amount of AIN as a sintering aid were prepared and sintered by hot press and SPS method. Density, hardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, flexural strength and thermal conductivity were measured. Densified silicon nitrides were obtained and it was found that the mechanical properties are depending on contents of AIN and sintering methods. We focus attention on the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical/thermal properties of silicon nitride including AIN additives.
