The thought that the measure of road safety is very important not only in design step but also in operation is being expended in our country. To measure the road safety, a road safety evaluation model can be a basis, which reveals the relationships between road geometry and traffic accidents. So we set the establishment of road safety evaluation model and the finding out of the relationships between road geometry and traffic accidents as the goal of this study. To analyze the relations between road geometry and traffic accidents, we built a database about the geometry and traffic accidents of Honam expressway and accomplished some statistical analyses. Through those analyses, major geometric factors (vertical slope, super-elevation, length of tangent, location of tangent, curve radius, length of curve, location of curve) were selected to compose the road safety evaluation model. We did not use the geometric factors directly as variables of the model but classified and weighted the factors to evaluate their effects on traffic accidents. In our final model, the probability of traffic accident can be explained by some indices regarding each geometric factors.
