다문화주의와 인종·종족범주 논쟁 : 프랑스의 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

프랑스에서는 이미 오래전부터 ‘다문화주의’와 다문화담론의 수용을 둘러싸고 매우 첨예한 논쟁이 학계를 필두로 언론/시민사회 및 정치권에서 일어났으며 현재에도 논쟁은 여러 양상을 띠고 계속 진행 중이다. “출신지역, 인종, 종교를 구분하지 않고 오직 프랑스 시민으로 구성된 프랑스 국민만을 인정”한다는 문구가 프랑스 현행 헌법조문에 명확히 나와 있듯이 프랑스에서는 대혁명 이래 공화주의적 보편주의에 입각하여 프랑스 시민성을 정의한다. 그러나 프랑스의 보편적 시민성 원칙은 최근에 들어 문화적·종교적 다양성과 차이의 공식적·제도적 인정을 요구하는 다문화주의 담론의 특수성과 대립하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 1990년대 말 프랑스 인구통계학/사회학계에서 촉발되어 현재에도 진행 중인 ‘인종·종족범주 논쟁’을 재구성하여 이를 계기로 ‘다문화주의’의 선험적 조건이자 개별 문화를 보유한 것으로 전제하는 집단(특히 종족 ethnie, ethnic group)의 구성 원칙과 과정을 집중적으로 조명하고, 종족을 기준으로 사회를 가르는 원칙이 초래할 수 있는 사회 구성 원칙의 변화 가능성 및 정치적 함의를 추론한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In France, "multiculturalism" has been for some time an "hot issue" of french academics and often fierce controversies over the various themes and opinions accociated with multiculturalism even extend to french mass media and politics. Ever since the French Revolution, citizenship in France has been defined on the ground rule of republican universalism. But recently, this french republican universalism is challenged by multicultural particularism which claims official and institutional recognition of cultural/religious diversity and differences. In this study, we try to reconstitute “controversies on racial·ethnical categories" triggered in french academic fields - i.e. demography and sociology, etc - in 90s. And we focus on some constitutive principles and processes of "ethnic groups", presumed to possess specific culture and therefore individual cultural unit, constitutive of multicultural design of a society. Finally, we will try to infer some possibilities of changes in basic rules of social constitution and political outcomes caused by introduction of new principle of constitution of society based on "ethnic groups".
