학습자의 말하기에 드러난 ‘쉼(pause)’ 양상 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 국어에서 반언어적 표현으로 간주되는 '쉼'에 대한 총체적 양상을 다룬 논의이다. 논의는 크게 두 가지로 구분된다. 첫째는 '쉼'에 대한 국어교육적 고찰을 다룬 부분으로, 여기에서는 크게 말하기와 읽기, 그리고 매체와 관련된 '쉼'의 교육적 양상을 상세하게 고찰한다. 대화와 발표에서의 '쉼'의 여러 측면들을 구체적으로 다룬다. 나아가 소리읽기와 뜻읽기, 그리고 말하기와 읽기에서의 '쉼'의 차이를 개괄적으로 접근한다. 아울러 매체를 활용함으로써 학습자들 스스로 '쉼'이 언어 수행에서 어떤 역할을 하는지의 문제를 교육내용, 방법과 관련시켜 제시하였다.
둘째는 학습자들의 실제 말하기에 드러나는 '쉼'의 양상을 대본과 전사본으로 구분하여 접근하였다. 이는 실제 학교 현장의 말하기에서 대다수의 학습자들이 말하기 대본을 그래도 읽는 결과에 토대를 두고, 이를 보다 실질적인 언어수행의 과정으로 간주하고, 나아가 말하기의 연속선상에서 다루려고 하였다. 따라서 '쉼'을 다층적으로 구분하여 접근하였다. 우선은 대본과 전사본으로 구분되는데, 대본에서는 '전제한 쉼', 그리고 전사본에서는 '구현한 쉼'이 '의도한 쉼'과 '의도하지 않은 쉼'으로 구분되어 접근된다. 이를 통해 '쉼'이라는 반언어적 표현이 학습자들의 다양한 언어 수행 의도와 직접적으로 관련됨을 밝혔다는 데 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Pause is an expression aspect of paralanguage that is reflected in speakers' context. A production unit is easily appeared as a segment of intonation but a pause is not easily come out with time unit. In other words it is arbitrarily appeared according to speaker' mental situation. Because it is a core unit for decision of semantic segment and contextual meaning, a pause is became an essential element of semantic decision. The paper is a preliminary investigation considering to this. Especially it investigates aspects of pause in speaking and reading. A pause of speaking is more arbitrary than reading in function, form, and duration. It is used for meaning change, utterance shift, attention etc in speaking. And it is focused on rhythm tuning according to respiration in oral reading. An educational application of a medium is treated with as a devision of method and content in addition to this.

This paper is an action research about pause as a paralanguage expression. It is assumed two kinds of speaking purpose or discourse pattern. And a certain level of learners showed pauses that could be revealed in the entire process of speaking. For this purpose, two hypotheses were constructed, and based on this holistic pause aspects of announcement were discussed.
