언제나 마무리되는 이야기, 끝나지 않는 역사: Ever After

국문 초록 (Abstract)

초록에서도 밝혔듯, 본 연구는 필자의 장기과업인 “역사적 성찰의 문학: 진실에 다가서는 상상력”이라는 연속과제의 일환이다. ‘역사와 문학의 상관관계’를 주시한 필자의 학위논문을 출발점으로 이미 언급한 논제들을 좀 더 치밀하고 본격적인 논의로 갈무리하고 연관된 논제들을 추가로 연구하기 위한 것이다. 역사를 이야기하는 문학을 추궁하는 과정은 역사와 문학의 교차점을 밟고 그 상호관계를 천착하는 과정이다. 아울러 이제까지의 논지를 자성하면서 오류를 수정하고 미비점을 보완하여 발전적인 진일보를 하려는 지적노력의 과정이기도 하다.
포스트모더니즘적인 ‘온갖 것의 허물기’는 문∙사∙철의 인문학적 삼권분립(三權分立)을 붕괴시켜 문학도로서 방향감각을 잡기 어렵게 만들었다. 과거의 역사 학도이자 현재의 문학도로서 필자는 허구와 역사의 온전한 분리를 외친 전통역사관의 주장을 완전히 무시하지 못하지만, 서로가 배타적일 수 없다는 작금의 원리를 더욱 존중한다. 그리하여 문학과 사학의 혼종적인 입지 위에서 경계선상의 의식으로 현실을 가늠하면서 이야기와 역사, 소서사(his/her story)와 대서사(History)의 상관관계를 꾸준한 학구적 조바심으로 주시한다.
필자는 1980년대의 역사자의식적인 영국소설을 중심으로 문학의 역사성찰 양상을 추적하고 있다. 흔히 ‘잘못된/왜곡된 역사’라고 말하는 역사기술적인 합리화가 분명히 있다고 볼 때, 본질적으로 허구인 문학이 과거와 현재를 타당성 있게 파악하고 설명할 수 있을까. 시간에 대한 문학의 설명이 얼마나 이해 가능할 것이며, 그로써 과거를 포용하고 현실을 인지하면서 미래의 가능성을 다양하게 제시할 수 있을까. 허구로써 가려진 진실을 어디까지 상정할 수 있을 것이며, 역사기술이 메우지 못하는 모종의 간극을 채울 수 있을까.
많은 경우, 역사가 들려주는 사실과 진실은 다르며 드러난 사실과 보이지 않는 내적 진실과의 사이에는 엄청난 간극이 존재하기에 우리는 빙산의 일각으로서 역사를 바라볼 뿐이다. 사실과 진실의 간극을 메우는 문제는 더욱 문학적인 관심대상이 되었고, ‘문학적 상상력으로써 이야기하기’가 대안적인 역사서술의 하나가 되리라는 생각을 낳았다. 문학이 풀어내는 과거는 상당한 역사적 사실을 포함하는 경우가 많고, 당대사적인 상상력이 드러난 사실과 숨어있는 진실 사이의 간극에 다리를 놓아 줄 수도 있음이다.
비록 문학적 상상력이 역사서술의 자성을 일깨웠다 해도 문학의 허구가 파헤치는 사실과 진실의 정도를 섣불리 단언할 수는 없다. 그저 소서사를 대서사에 접목시킴으로써 가급적 광범위하고 다양한 진실을 포괄할 수 있기를 바랄 뿐이다. 역사적 파

In last century Britain, there were plenty of historically self-conscious novels that bore the unavoidable reciprocity between historical imagination and literary inventiveness, making history and literature intercommunicate. They asserted that both historiography and fiction as narratives were human constructs, and narrative artificiality in historiography led history to the fictional rather than to the factual. They believe the novel becomes not only passively imprinted upon history, but also one of the ways which [re]makes and [re]writes history.
Two directions can be noticed about these novels. One is an aggressive challenge against or an active intervention in historiography, which subverts and replaces conventional history through using historiographic terms. The other finally retrieves the position of literature after insisting on history as story-telling, simultaneously fore-grounding literariness as much as historicity in it. Graham Swift’s Ever After excellently illustrates the process of the latter, showing that ever-ending stories make never-ending history.
