한국 근대 소설의 형성과 진화론 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 한국 근대소설이 형성되는 과정에서 서구 진화론이 어떠한 양상으로 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴보고, 특히 염상섭의 소설 속에 나타난 진화론적 상상력에 주목하여 염상섭이 갖고 있는 진화론적 시각이 비유적인 언어와 경성에 대한 묘사, 개성에 대한 인식으로 드러나는 양상을 고찰하는데 주안점을 두었다. 또한 한국근대소설 형성과 과학 담론의 교섭 양상을 살펴보는데 큰 의의를 두고 있다.
연구계획에 따라 나는 동아시아에서 서구 진화론 및 사회진화론을 수용하는 양상을 검토하였다. 그 과정에서, 염상섭 초기 자연주의 경향 소설에 나타난 진화론적 상상력을 밝혀냈다. 또한 염상섭 장편소설 속에 나타나는 진화론적 상상력과 서술 전략을 분석하였고, 문학다위니즘 이론을 공부하고 논의하는 가운데 한국에서의 문학 다위니즘 비평의 모형을 모색해 보았다.
염상섭의 소설들은 식민지 현실을 생물학적 생태로 파악하며, 진화론적인 인식을 통해 당대를 풍미했던 왜곡된 사회진화론적인 담론을 비판적으로 서술하고 있다는 점에서 그 소설적 의의는 크다. 본고는 염상섭의 민족주의적 자각도 물론 중요하지만, 그와 함께 내재되어 있는 진화론적인 상상력이 한국 근대 소설 형성에 깊은 영향을 미치고 있다는 점을 밝히려고 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims at proposing the perspective from Darwinian criticism on the experience of modern colonialism and Naturalistic novels. In particular, I focus on the evolutionary imagination appeared in Yeom Sang-seop’s novels.
Depending on the evolutionary point of view which his novels have, I analyzed Metaphorical languages, the description of Seoul and recognitions of the individuality. Also, I looked at the meaning and the process in the Korean modern novel formed in association with western scientific knowledge.
According to the research plan, I examined the patterns which modern literatures accepted evolution theory and society-evolution in East Asia. In the process, I analyzed evolutionary imagination in Yom Sang-seop’s early novels with naturalistic tendencies, and also perspective of evolutionary biology and narrative strategies in his literatures.
