신화와 역사 사이에서 司馬遷의 선택과 그 의미

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고에서는 신화와 역사 사이에서 司馬遷의 선택과 그 의미를 오늘날 중국에서 진행 중인 일련의 역사 프로젝트와 관련하여 살펴보았다. 사마천은 ꡔ史記ꡕ에서 五帝를 역사인물로 선택하여 그들의 신화적 요소를 제거하였다. 그는 오제를 통해 덕 있는 통치자의 모델을 제시하고자 하였다. 사마천은 또한 華夏와 주변의 비화하 민족까지도 오제의 시작인 黃帝의 자손으로 간주하였다. 여기에는 물론 후손에게까지 영향을 미치는 조상의 덕에 대한 그의 신념이 내재해 있다. 그런데 그가 중국을 위협하는 이민족의 기원을 화하로 흡수하여 그들의 계보를 창조한 데에는 그들을 제압하고자 하는 의도가 있다. 사마천은 화하가 우월하다고 여겼는데, 중국 중심의 문화 우월주의는 大一統 사상과 더불어 오늘날에도 지속되고 있다.
夏商周斷代工程, 中華文明探源工程, 東北工程, 遼河文明展 등은 중국의 국가주의적 프로젝트들이다. 이들 프로젝트의 학자들은 중국 여러 지역 내의 다양한 민족과 문화를 중화문명의 필수불가결한 부분으로 간주한다. 통일된 다민족 국가라는 개념이 모든 프로젝트를 관통하고 있다. 이를 위하여 이들 프로젝트에서는 신화와 역사를 모두 민족 단결을 위한 도구로 다룬다. 각 프로젝트의 과정에서 신화의 역사화가 이루어지고 있는데, 여기에는 고고학이라는 강력한 배경이 있다. 이와 더불어 민족주의적 역사 서사가 그 어느 때보다도 더 과학적인 접근을 통해 인정을 받고 있다.
ꡔ사기ꡕ는 오늘날 역사 전쟁에 강력한 무기를 제공하는 지배 서사이다. 그런데 필자는 사마천에 대한 지금의 견해들이 단일한 국가 정체성을 세우기 위한 그들의 필요에 의해 형성된 것이라고 생각한다. ꡔ사기ꡕ는 우주적 시각에서 천인의 관계와 고금의 변화를 탐구하기 위한 것이었지, 중화민족의 ‘중국사’를 위한 것이 아니었다.

〈 ABSTRACT 〉

This is an article on the Sima Qian's selection and its meaning between the myth and the history, which is related to China's historical projects of today. In the Records of the Historian, Sima Qian selected the five emperors as real figures and eliminated their mythical elements. He intended to present a model of virtuous emperor through them. He also regarded Huaxia and non-Huaxia as the posterity of the Yellow Emperor, the first of the five emperors. Undoubtedly, there lied his belief in the virtue of the ancestor which has influence on the descendants. At the same time, when he invented the pedigree of threatening barbarian by assimilating its origin into Huaxia, his intention was to control it. Sima Qian held that Huaxia is the dominant, such Sinocentrism has remained along with the idea of Great Unification.
The Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Projet, the grand project aiming to seek the origin of ancient Chinese civilization, the Northeast Project, the exhibition on Liaohe civilization are China's nationalist projects. The diverse ethnic groups and cultures in various regions of China are regarded by the projects' scholars as inseparable parts of Chinese civilization. The idea of the unified multi-ethnic nation runs through the whole projects. To support this idea, these projects treat the myth and history as a tool for national cohesive force. In the process of each project, the mythical figures are interpreted historically, such historization of myth has a powerful archeological background. With that, the nationalist historical narratives have been validated through the more scientific approach than before.
The Records of the Historian is a master narrative which provides the powerful weapon for the history wars of today. But I think, contemporary views of Sima Qian are shaped by their present needs to construct a unitary national identity. The Records of the Historian is a great work for researching the relationship between nature and human, and for understanding the changes both past and present from the universal point of view, not for the national history of the Chinese.
