This study starts from the fact that the human basic emotional expressions are embodiment, which was revealed by previous studies. This study is for the purpose to analyze the aspects of conceptualization for basic emotional expressions targeting the modern Chinese from this angle and investigate the universality and particularity of the Chniense in cultural context through comparion with the expressions in Korean. The subjects of this study are six kinds of feelings such as ‘Love’, ‘Joy’, ‘Anger’, ‘Sadness’, ‘Fear’ and ‘Hate’.
Results from research conducted with ‘Joy’, ‘Sadness’ and ‘Fear’ showed that there was significant similarity in aspects of emotion metaphors of two languages. In Chinese, ‘Joy’ was considered 10 kinds of objects such as ‘up, fluid, light (heat), thing, food (wine, sweet thing), animal & plant (bird, flower), thread, red, letter and climate (weather)’. In Korean, ‘Joy’ was considered 9 kinds of objects such as ‘balloon, liquiid in a bowl (river, sea), fire, thing, food (wine), plant(flower), thread, storm, redness’ and two language showed significant similarity. In case of ‘Sadness’, conceptual metaphors of ‘Sadness is liquid’ existed in both Chinese and Korean. According to my investigation, ‘Sadness’ in both laguages was considered 9 kinds of objects such as ‘liquid in a bowl, redness, thing, plant, food, river/sea, climate, thread and disease’. In additon, ‘Sadness’ and ‘Fear’ were recognized in both languages as 9 kinds of objects such as ‘liquid in a bowl, redness, thing, plant, food, river/sea, climate, thread and disease’. Of course, we can find the differences. For example, Korean's 'storms, redness' were difficult to find the equivalent examples in the Chinese.
In this study, we would like to compare the similarities and differences in aspects of metaphor conceptualization in basic emotions appearing in two languages and analyze the cause. For this, we will collect relevant examples targeting the language courses at Peking University and classify them. Once other studies regarding the rest of emotional feelings are conducted, we can compare whole aspects of emotional metaphors systematically and expect to find unknown factors of language.
