퓨리터니즘과 근대과학의 상관성 연구―자연과학의 형이상학적 토대 구축을 위한 신학과 과학의 대화

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1. 자연에 대한 과학적 접근은 신학에 어떠한 의미를 주는가? 그리고 자연에 대한 신학적 접근은 과학에 어떠한 의미를 주는가? 본 연구는 이 같은 물음에 대한 대답을 시도하는 작업으로 자연과학의 신학적 형이상학(Theological metaphysics)의 근거를 탐구하였다. 본 연구의 궁극적인 목적은 신학, 자연과학, 그리고 형이상학의 통섭(consilience)을 지향하여 종교와 과학의 불필요한 대립과 갈등을 해소하기 위한 핵심가치와 이론적인 토대를 구축하는데 있다.
지금까지 도출된 연구결과물은 "근대 과학혁명의 형이상학적 토대"로써 본 연구는 근대과학의 기계론적인 세계관은 기독교적 신념체계 및 가치와 얼마만큼 친화성을 갖는지를 밝히는 것이고, 둘째 신학과 자연과학의 매개체로서 형이상학적 추론들이 얼마만큼 설득력을 지니고 있는지를 판단해 보는 것이다. 결국 이 글은 ‘기계론적인 세계관’으로 대변되는 근대 과학혁명은 과학의 탐구에서 신학의 형이상학적 요소를 배제하지 않았으며 따라서 그것은 무신론적인 자연주의 혹은 과학적 결정론으로 귀결될 수 없고 오히려 심오한 합리성의 틀 속에서 과학과 신학의 영역을 조화로운 관계로 설정했음을 밝히고자 하였다.
3. 또 하나의 연구물은 "조나단 에드워즈의 자연과학 이해"로써 퓨리턴사상의 틀 속에서 에드워즈의 과학적 사유의 이해와 태도를 탐구하며 종교와 과학의 상호 교섭에 관한 이론과 방법, 그리고 역사적 근거를 확보하여 양자의 합리적인 관계설정을 위한 토대를 마련하고자 하였다. 그리하여 종교와 과학의 불필요한 대립과 갈등을 해소하기 위한 핵심가치와 이론적인 토대를 구축하는데 있었다.

1. This project is to examine theological metaphysics of natural science, aiming to solve conflicts between religion and science.
2. First study is to investigate metaphysical basis of modern science. In this paper, I raised an inquiry of what is critical difference between medieval view of world and modern science in history of the science. The paper explains that my chief assumption can be advanced by focusing the comparison of medieval methods in science and physics and metaphysics in the seventeenth century. Chapter two explores historical backgrounds of modern natural science, mainly focusing Aristotelian philosophy and Thomas Aquinas’ magnificent synthesis of Christian theology. Chapter three examines physics and metaphysics in the seventeenth century, dealing with Galileo’s new science, Descartes’ philosophy, and Newton’s paradigm. In conclusion(chapter four and five), this paper argues that although at many points the development of natural science was hindered by religious powers, religious elements played an important role through indirect contributions to science in its revolutionary period.
