이돈화의『新人哲學』에 나타난 천도교의 구원관 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 이돈화의 저서 『新人哲學』을 통해 이돈화가 창발적으로 재해석하고자 한 종교개념과 그에 따른 구원체계를 연구하는데 목적이 있다. 이에 연구의 내용을 좀 더 구체적으로 열거하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, ‘종교’가 궁극적으로 지향하는 바가 무엇인지 고찰하는데 있다. 종교는 인간의 가장 궁극적인 관심에서 시작된다. 결국 종교의 궁극적인 관심은 ‘죽음’이라는 사건과 죽음 이후의 문제라고 할 수 있다. 종교는 인간의 이러한 궁극에 대한 물음과 그에 대한 대답을 다양한 구원관을 통해 해명해왔다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 종교적 보편적 구원 문제와 함께 신종교에 나타나는 구원의 특징 특히 천도교 구원의 특징은 무엇인지 살펴보았다.
둘째, 본 연구에서는 천도교의 구원관을 이돈화가 『新人哲學』에서 어떻게 정립했는지 살펴보는데 있다. 천도교에서 구원개념은 ‘개벽’(開闢)이며, ‘개벽’의 완성은 ‘지상천국’(地上天國)이다. 그렇다면 ‘지상천국’을 완성할 주체인 ‘新人’이 갖추어야 할 덕목과 사명은 무엇인가. 바로 ‘德’과 ‘布德天下’라고 할 수 있다. 천도교는 보국안민의 계책으로 천도(天道)와 천덕(天德)을 널리 알리는데[布德] 있었다. 천도교 포교의 목적은 조화와 술법으로 포교하는 것이 아니라 천(天)의 순리대로 천의 덕(德)을 펼치는데 있다. 천도(天道)가 만물의 이치이자 하늘의 마음[天心]이므로 천덕(天德)은 인간 자신에게 내재한 천심(天心)을 회복하고자 의지라 할 수 있다. 이처럼 본 연구에서는 이돈화의 『新人哲學』에 나타나는 천도교 구원관의 개념과 전개과정을 살펴보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study tries to reveal the religious concept and its salvation system which were reinterpreted by Lee Don-hwa in his book Shin-in-choul-hak (新人哲學, the philosophy of a new human). More specifically, it could be explained in two steps.
Firstly, I consider what the religion intends basically. Religion begins with ultimate concern about human being. In the end, the ultimate concern of religion is the event of death, and the issue of after death. Religion has elucidated questions and answers about the finality through diverse salvation theories. Therefore, I’d like to examine universal matters of religious salvation, and characteristics of salvation which are found out in new religion, especially the Chondo-kyo (天道敎).
Secondly, I consider how Lee Don-hwa established the salvation theory of Chondo-kyo in the Shin-in-choul-hak. The notion of salvation means the Gaebyeok (開闢, the beginning of the world), and the perfection of the Gaebyeok is the Ji-sang-cheon-guk (地上天國, the heaven on earth) in Chondo-kyo. Then, this Ji-sang-cheon-guk is completed by the Shin-in (新人, the new human), so what is moral principle and mission which the Shin-in should possess.
