초점과 주제의 음성학적 관련성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 언어학 일반에서 산발적으로 소개된 이론들을 망라하여 체계화하고 이를 한국어에 적용시키기 위하여 한국어에 나타난 각종 초점과 주제에 대한 개념들을 정교하게 정의하고 이들의 피치분석과 어절 길이의 비교을 통해 음성적으로 확인하는 데 있다.초점과 관련된 개념에 있어서는 Rooth (1985, 1996)의 개념을 존중하여 기존의 연구에서 당연시하는 전제가 초점의 정의에 있어서 필수적 요소가 아니라는 것을 지적하였다. 그 대신 활성화된 열린 명제와 대안집합이 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 주장하였다. 그리고 Prince (1981)의 제안에 따라 대안 집합을 이루는 개체들의 신구성 (familiarity)을 하위분류하여 대안집합의 크기, 성격, 배타성의 정도에 따라 확인초점, 정보초점, 대조초점으로 분류할 수 있음을 보였다. 그리고 주제에 대한 개념도 대안집합의 특징에 따라 문장주제와 대조주제로 분류하였고 이들간의 차이를 피치와 어절 길이의 차이로 확인할 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The research reported in this paper attempts to define various notions involving focus and topic found in Korean and also appeals to phonetic attributes to verify those notions that are conceptually argued for. This paper crucially relies on Rooth (1985, 1996) for the notion of focus and its pragmatic significance, and also utilizes pagmatic notions such as familiarity as found in Prince (1981). The basic idea of this paper is to further decompose the notion alternative set into sub-components and to assign different levels of familiarity to those components, thereby enableing us to define different kinds of focus and topic according to the properties of those subcomponents. Based on this, informational focus, identificational focus, and contrastive focus are posited as subcategories of focus; sentence topic and contrastive topic are identified as sub-componets of topic. The phonetic experiments performed in this reaseach has also produced some revealing data in pitch levels and syllable duration regarding these notions.
