Using data from the SELS(Seoul Educational Longitudinal Study), this study presented changes in achievement of students over a three-year period from 10th to 12th grades and explored the influence of type of high school attended on initial achievement levels and changes in these levels. The data were analyzed using the three-level Hierarchical Linear Growth Model. Results showed that students who attend special purpose or autonomous private schools have somewhat higher initial academic achievement than those who attend ordinary high schools, but there is little difference across types of schools on rates of changes in achievement. Next, selective high school students is more likely to get a higher educational outcomes than their peers. However, the gaps were reduced after controlling for individual’s family background. Finally, students from low SES families were more negatively affected by competitive atmosphere around selective high schools, compared with those from high SES families.
