Research Summary in the Third Year
1. Construction of regional indicators
Differences of the regional characteristics become important external variables because they can affect the local residents' lives. Such variations in the regional characteristics can be analyzed in the hierarchical order from relatively macro environmental characteristics to actually residing neighborhood characteristics. For the variations we measured 1) an index number of quality of regional life by using formal statistics data, 2) an indicator of poverty by using data of dongs, 3) an index number of poverty concentration of dongs by using data of tongs/ris, 4) indicators of regional level living environments by using panel data. The indicators of living environments include first, community attachment of the poors, second, local environments through the social conditions of the poors, third, local traffic environments through convenience of traffic means, fourth, sense of security in the neighborhood through recognition of crime, fifth, collective efficacy.
2. Design of the third-year panel research
The third-year research questionnaire was completed by revising the first-year and the second-year questionnaire. And a responsible person for the research in each research area was decided and interviewers were allocated in order to make cooperative system for the research. In order to reduce loss rate of the final panel a rule to follow after all respondents who answer in the first-year research was made. Other rules of following after the respondents was the same as the second-year ones.
3. Execution of the third-year panel research
The panel research was done from December 29 in 2005 to March 31 in 2006. To collect the data eight researchers, six research assistants and fifty interviewers were mobilized. Collection of the data was done through visiting the respondents and face-to-face interview methods. Through this process total 608 questionnaires was collected. The response rate was 62.8%. Persons in charge in the allocated areas visited the areas and supervised the interviewers at all times, and in case of the low response rate areas they exhorted the respondents to answer the interview with help of the local public servants.
4. Analysis of the panel data
The analysis of the data was done as follows: first, the response rate by region and types of sample, second, response characteristics in socio-demographic variables, health, family, income and economic activities, local welfare, work, education, social consciousness, neighborhood environments and social supports, third, difference in response characteristics by response-nonresponse groups.
5. Analysis of the depth interview data
The causes and dynamics of poverty formation were analyzed using the second depth interview data which were gathered during August and September in 2005 using life-history method. Life history was analyzed mainly about growing process, education and school life, work and occupation, marriage and family, social relations. Total 29 respondents were interviewed in the second depth interview and the interview recordings were translated into written language and summarized to analyze.
6. The depth interview of public social welfare specialists and analysis of the data
The depth interviews were done for the public social welfare specialists on November 25, 2005 in Busan and on December 9, 2005 in Kyungnam Province. Each interview was done for 3-4 hours using prepared questions. The interviews were recorded to analyze. The interview recordings were translated into written language, and the translated data were analyzed.
7. Workshop for the research results
Two workshops were held under the auspices of The Institute for East Asian Studies and supported by KRF in the third year: "Life and Consciousness of the Poor" on June 9, 2006 and "Region and Poverty : Cycles of Poverty and Policy Direction" on November 17, 2006.
