식민지시기 문화적 내셔널리즘과 대중문화영웅의 형성과정 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

(1) 대중문화영웅 형성과 젠더의 작동을 살펴보았다. 구체적으로 최승희를 비롯한 배구자, 박외선 등 무용계의 여성인물, 손기정을 비롯한 서정권(권투), 권태하(마라톤), 김은배(마라톤), 황을수(권투) 등 체육계의 남성인물이 영웅화되는 과정에서, 우선 이들은 비언어적인 형식(무용, 체육)으로 자신을 표현해낸 근대적 개인이라는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다. 이것은 전근대적 공동체 속의 생물학적 개인이 근대적 사회문화에서 ‘신여성’과 ‘청년’이라는 새로운 주체로 형성됨을 의미한다. (2) 대중문화영웅의 전통성과 근대성; 대중문화영웅의 활동과 그를 담론화하는 과정에서 ‘조선적인 것’으로서의 전통성과 근대성이 활발하게 작동되고 있었다. 최승희는 전통무용 혹은 조선적인 무용을 계승하는 문제에 대해서 끊임없이 고민ㆍ실천했고, 이후 전통춤 공연, 국극ㆍ악극공연에서 전통무용이 수용되는데에 많은 영향력을 미쳤다. 또 손기정은 민족정신 혹은 민족혼의 계승이라는 정신적 가치의 전통성 실현에 중요한 의미를 내포하고 있었다. 한편 최승희와 손기정이라는 내셔널 심볼은 ‘근대적 육체’에서 중요한 의미가 있다. 전근대사회에서는 상상할 수 없었던 ‘육체성’ 즉 육체를 통해 자신을 표현하는 행위가 가능해졌으며, 근대적 스펙터클로서 ‘육체’가 해석되는 중요한 지점을 보여주었다. (3) 대중문화영웅의 아시아주의와 문화적 내셔널리즘의 굴절; 대중문화영웅이 우월한 식민지 조선인의 대표로 세계무대로 진출하는 과정에서 아시아와 서양이 교차하고 있었다. 최승희를 따라다녔던 ‘조선의 꽃’, ‘반도의 무희’, ‘동양의 진주’, ‘동방의 꽃’라는 수식어들에 대해서는 향토성과 식민성, 나아가 오리엔탈리즘의 시선이 투영되어 있었다. 또 손기정의 경우, 스포츠 취미가 널리 퍼지면서 미나미 지로 조선총독이 ‘선만일여’를 두드러지게 내세웠던 사회적 맥락이 형성되었다. 따라서 대중문화영웅라는 내셔널 심볼을 둘러싸고, 제국일본이 효과적으로 활용한 아시아주의의 내면화, 서구열강의 시선이었던 오리엔탈리즘의 영항도 있었으며, 나아가 아시아주의에서 대동아공영권으로 변용되는 과정에서 식민지의 문화적 내셔널리즘이 제국일본의 애국주의로 굴절되는 맥락이 있었던 것이다.
