영국 낭만주의 시의 형식 비평 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 1990년대 이후의 영국 낭만주의에 대한 비평에서 ‘형식’(form)에 대한 관심이 중요한 방법론의 하나로 부각되고 있다는 점에 착목하여 과거의 형식주의(formalism) 비평과 구별되는 새로운 형식 비평이 낭만주의 연구에 적용되고 있는 방식을 밝혀내고 이와 같은 연구 방법을 도입한 실제 비평 성과물에 대한 평가를 시도하였다. 이를 위해 우선 1990년대 이전의 낭만주의 비평사에서 ‘형식’에 대한 논의가 전반적으로 억압되었던 과정을 비판적으로 고찰하기 위해 신비평에서 해체비평을 거쳐 신역사주의로 이어지는 낭만주의에 관한 이론적 논의의 역사를 살펴보았다. 그리고 1990년대 이후에 ‘형식’이라는 핵심어를 중심으로 이루어진 비평적 성과들에 대한 자세한 분석을 통해 낭만주의 비평의 현주소를 파악하고 앞으로 비평적 작업이 나아가야 할 방향성을 모색하는 작업이 이루어졌다. 최근에 나오고 있는 영국 낭만주의 비평서들은 낭만주의 시기가 새로운 글쓰기의 장르를 찾기 위한 광범위하고 도전적인 형식적인 실험의 시기라는 전제에서 출발한다. 이 비평서들은 이 당시에 새롭게 대두된 시 형식들이 대부분 기존의 장르들을 쇄신하거나 다수의 장르들을 서로 접목시키려는 시도를 보여 주고 있다는 데 주된 관심을 둔다. 또한 이런 형식적 실험은 역사적 맥락에서 평가되어 당대에 가졌던 윤리적/이데올로기적 함의에 대한 고찰로 이어지는 경우가 많다. 본 연구는 이 새로운 형태의 형식 비평이 기존에 낭만주의 비평을 지배했던 ‘유기적 통일성’(organic coherence)이나 ‘인지적 총체성’(cognitive totality) 등의 관념을 비판적으로 조망하고 있는 방식을 살피고 이런 비평 방법론의 도입이 낭만주의에 대한 비평의 흐름을 전반적으로 바꾸어 놓고 있는 양상을 고찰하였다. 새롭게 대두되는 형식 비평은 1990년대부터 낭만주의 연구에서 중요한 자리를 차지하기 시작했다. 통일성(unity)과 총체성(totality)을 추구하는 신비평의 형식주의에서 탈피하여, 현재의 낭만주의 형식 비평은 "형식적 간접성, 불안정성, 파편성, 불규칙성, 비정통성, 잉여성, 다양성, 이중성, 복합성, 접합성, 비결정성, 인위성, 그리고 우연성과 유희성에 열려 있음"(formal indirection, instability, fragmentation, irregularity, illegitimacy, gratuity, multiplicity, doubleness, combination, foldedness, indeterminacy, artifice, openness to contingency and playfulness)에 관심을 둔다. 또한 낭만주의 형식 비평은 역사적인 성격을 강하게 띠고 있다. ‘형식’은 낭만주의 시기의 주요한 사회/역사적 문제였던 전쟁, 민족주의, 제국, 도시화 등의 사안들에 대해 작품이 취하는 입장이 드러나는 방식을 매개한다. ‘형식’의 도입과 변형이 기존 작품에 대한 인식과 수용의 방법론을 재고하게 한다는 점에서 낭만주의 작가들의 형식 실험은 독자들에게 깊은 영향을 끼친다. 독자는 더 이상 ‘서정적’인 낭만주의 텍스트에서 소외되는 대상이 아니라, 텍스트를 함께 쓰고 윤리적인 선택을 하며 나아가서 작가가 사후에 가지게 되는 명성을 부여하게 되는 역동적인 주체로 다시 태어난다. 현재의 낭만주의 형식 비평은 정전화된 작가와 작품을 새롭게 읽을 수 있게 해 준다. 유기적 통일성을 추구하는 텍스트로 여겨졌던 낭만주의 시들은 다양한 문제를 제기하고 도전적인 태도를 취하는 작품들로 다시 평가되고 있다. 이 과정에서 기존의 낭만주의 비평에 잘 들어맞지 않는 작가

This research proposes to investigate the newly emerging interest in "form" as an important critical method in the Romantic studies for the last two decades. Romantic formal criticism, distinct from formalism in the past, is in the course of reshaping discussions of Romantic literature. Before 1990, "form" had been largely marginalized in the long history of Romantic studies. New criticism, Deconstruction, and New Historicism shared the common ground in that they all subscribed to the traditional idea of "Romantic organicism." As a result, generic experimentation was disregarded, and discussions of Romantic literature was confined within the boundary of lyricism, without the due attention to its concern with history and the audience. Reversing this tradition, formal criticism views concepts such as "organic coherence" or "cognitive totality" in negative lights, and instead, takes interest in "formal indirection, instability, fragmentation,irregularity, illegitimacy, gratuity, multiplicity, doubleness, combination, foldedness, indeterminacy, artifice, openness to contingency and playfulness." Romantic formal criticism is also characterized by its strong commitment fo historical analysis. "Form" mediates ways in which the text responds to the contemporary socio-political issues such as war, nationalism, empire, and urbanization. As the formal aspects of a given text function as a bridge between the author's intention and the reader's expectation, the reader gains significance as an indispensable participant in completing the text, making ethical choices, and granting posthumous fame for the author. Current formal criticism opens up a new way to re-evaluate the "canonized" writers and texts; in addition, it contributes to the reconstruction of Romantic literature through in-depth discussions of formerly "marginalized" writers in the period.
