This study aims to examine the entire picture of how modern Japan conducted research on the circumstances of Joseon with its organizations established to investigate overseas circumstances and secure the base for its colonial project.

<Tokyo Geographical Society’s Research Activities and Recognition of Joseon> pays attention to Tokyo Geographical Society organized in 1879 to work for its synthetic goals including its military goals. The association’s executives and members include the politicians, diplomats, soldiers, or scholars leading the Maiji Era, and some of them were actually involved in the decision-making process for Japan’s policy of Joseon or the invasion into Joseon. The association spied out the circumstances of Joseon through various routes to put distorted images of Joseon into them and affected modern Japan’s recognition of Joseon. The reason why the association’s roles were crucial was that it conducted research on the circumstances of Joseon initiatively before the government offices like Takushoku (拓植局) or the Imperial (帝國) University, or the Residency-General or the Japanese Government General of Korea actually performed research on them.

From <Japanese Toho Association’s Research Activities and Recognition of Joseon>, it inspected the research activities on Joseon by Toho Association which was founded in 1891. The association’s executives and members also included influential figures in political relationships or the figures associated with the rule in Joseon. Although the association claimed to support academic societies, as the circumstances in Asia were getting urgent, it presented aggressive opinions about diplomacy or current events and investigated the politics, races, religion, or history in Asia in order to advance into other countries based on collected information.
To prepare for the Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War for soldiers, the two organizations conducted geographic research, investigation on the internal affairs and life phases of the bureaucrats or politicians in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and also research to find out ways to be alert about China’s policy to Joseon or Russia. The commercial research was to exclude Chinese merchants penetrating into the open port and even internal land and also expand Japan’s commercial supremacy. The geographic research even included the minerals and regions having potentials for development in Joseon so as to absorb its resources.
