Pansori and the Birth of 'Meot'(멋)

The Korean people recognize the word 'Meot'(멋) as the aesthetic term which designate the unique Korean beauty. Etymologically the word 'Meot'(멋) was derived from the word 'Mat'(맛). The time of derivation has been estimated as the early 20th century, but several examples of the word 'Meot'(멋) are found in some documents of late 19th century. In Jae Hyo Shin's Pansori works(1860s~1880s) and Min Young Ahn's Sijo(1880) the word 'Meot'(멋) and several examples of the word 'Mat'(맛) meant not the gustatory taste but the aesthetic character which a person acquired through musical experiences. So the birth time of 'Meot'(멋) can be estimated as 1870s.
In Jae Hyo Shin's Pansori works the word 'Meot'(멋) was used to designate the ability of performance and appreciation of music - especially Pansori. Also in Min Young Ahn's Sijo the word 'Meot'(멋) was closely related to the appreciation of Pansori. At the close of 19th century and in the early 20th century the word 'Meot'(멋) was used to designate persons who were well versed in folk music including Pansori. In this period persons who were well acquainted with 'Meot'(멋) belonged to the middle or lower classes.
In late 19th century the aesthetic category of 'Meot'(멋) was comedy. And the aesthetic characteristics of 'Meot'(멋) at that time were such as the rhythmic, the mature, the excessive, the light-hearted, deviation and individuality. Comedy and these characteristics are also the aesthetic category and characteristics of Pansori.
Therefore Pansori played an important role not only in the derivation of the word 'Meot'(멋) from the word 'Mat'(맛) but also in the process of which the word 'Meot'(멋) became the unique Korean beauty and the unique Korean aesthetic characteristic.

'멋'은 '맛'에서 분화하여 정립되었으며, 그것은 신재효의 판소리 사설과 안민영의 시조에 등장하는 '멋'의 용례로 보면 늦어도 1870년대로 추정된다. 특히 신재효의 사설에는 '맛'에서 '멋'으로 분화 이행하는 사례들이 다수 있어서 이를 뒷받침한다. '맛'이 미각의 대상임에 비해 '멋'은 청각과 시각 및 인지의 대상이며, '맛'이 음식과 관련이 있음에 비해 '멋'은 인간과 관련이 있고, 나아가 음악과 관련한 미적 향유 또는 수행 능력과 관련이 있으며, 특히 당시의 판소리를 비롯한 중하층이 담당한 음악과 밀접한 관련이 있음이 드러났다. 따라서 '멋'은 중하층에서 쓰기 시작한 용어이며, 그것도 당시 유행하던 중하층의 담담 예술과 관련하여 쓰이던 용어였음을 알 수 있다. 특히 판소리는 '멋'의 구현과 관련하여 가장 대표적으로 언급된 예술응 확인했으며, '멋'의 미적 특질과 판소리의 미적 구현 원리가 상통한 것도 '멋'의 정립과 확산에 판소리가 일정한 기여를 할 수 있었던 바탕이었다고 보았다. 탄생 초기 '멋'은 오늘날의 '멋'의 미적 특질과 상통하는 면이 있으나 미적 범주로는 골계에 속하며, 그 속성으로는 일탈, 넘침, 율동성 등이 특히 강했음을 밝혔다.
