국제관계연구의 인식론과 방법론: 과학적 실재론과 양자론의 비판적 검토 및 대안적 연구방법의 모색

국문 초록 (Abstract)

웬트가 추구했던 국제정치이론의 인식론적, 존재론적 통합은 사회과학의 특성을 고려해볼 때 올바른 방향을 지향하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 다만 두 가지 퍼즐에서 지적했듯이, 웬트는 보다 정교한 사회과학이론에 도달하지 못했고, 특히 방법론적으로 어떻게 주관적 접근방법과 객관적(과학적) 접근방법을 통합할 수 있는지 제시하지도 못했다. 이러한 웬트의 한계를 넘어서기 위해 본 연구에서는 그가 탐구했던 과학적 실재론의 인식론 및 존재론적 기초를 다시 검토하고, 그로부터 "제3의 논쟁"에서 촉발된 인식론 다툼에 대한 해법을 찾을 수 있는 가능성을 발견하였다. 즉 사회과학으로서의 국제정치이론은 주관주의와 객관주의의 스펙트럼 상에서 혼합된 형태의 존재론을 기반으로 한 인식론, 즉 이론적 "메커니즘"의 (다중적) 존재를 전제로 한 이론과 경험적 현상의 공존이 가능하다는 점을 구현할 수 있다 하겠다.
방법론적으로도 이 논문에서는 웬트가 시도했던 다양한 분석수준의 단순한 나열을 넘어서서 그들 사이에 실제 어떤 상호작용이 일어나는가에 대한 가상의 실험, 즉 시뮬레이션이라는 방법을 통해 그가 의도했던 구성적 사회현상을 재현할 수 있음을 논급하였다. 시뮬레이션은 비록 현실의 자료를 다루고 있지는 않지만, 인식론적으로 제시된 "메커니즘," 즉 이론적 도구를 토대로 만들어진 데이터를 다루기 때문에 현실을 설명할 수 있는 "그럴듯함(plausibility)"을 갖추고 있다. 이러한 데이터는 수많은 에러와 편견에 좌우되기 쉬운 현실의 사례와 데이터에서 드러나는 한계를 보완하는데 매우 큰 도움이 될 수 있으며, 특히 수많은 반복 실험을 통해 다양한 여건 하에서 만들어지는 사회과학적 사례들을 재생할 수 있다는 점에서 사회과학이 추구하는 궁극적 목적, 즉 "일반화(generalization)"에 있어 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 연구방법이 되고 있다. 이상과 같은 인식론적, 방법론적 논의는 웬트의 통합작업에서 드러난 한계를 극복하고 국제정치이론의 수준을 한 단계 더 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study has furthered the theoretical works that Alexander Wendt had sought in his ambitious project of social scientific efforts of integration in international relations. Two puzzles are presented in this research: First, what are major epistemological issues in the debates of international relations Second, what should be the best way for international relations to proceed in its methodological aspects For these two puzzles, this study started from the critique of Wendt's approach. He has revealed two problems in his integration of international realtions theories: insufficient model of theoretical mechanisms and the lack of sophisticated research method. Whereas Wendt has succeeded in presenting the teleogical mission that social sciences must be integrated in subjective as well as objective approaches, he could not have shown us how it is possible. This study discussed any possibility of overcoming these problems: First, upon the puzzle of epistemology, this study has elaborated the role fo theoretical "mechanisms" in IR theories, based upon the theories of scientific realism. Second, upon the puzzle of methodological alternatives, this study has sought the probability and plausibility of simulation methods in social sciences. These two sophisticated discussions may become the starting points for many IR theorists to go further what Wendt has developed in his integration of fragmented field of IR theory.
