부적응에 대한 옹호: 진화심리학으로 읽는 미국 흑인 문학

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1. 왜 진화 심리학인가

문학적 다윈주의(Literary Darwinism)를 주창한 Joseph Carroll은 "지상의 어느 곳, 어느 시대, 어느 작가에 의해 씌어진 문학 작품 중 다윈주의 분석 범위를 벗어나는 작품은 없다"(189)고 단언한다. 왜냐하면 인간은 적응(adaptation)을 위해 자연 선택(natural selection)의 원리를 따라 왔고, 그 결과 보편적 패턴의 행동 양식이 인간 본성으로 구현되었으며, 대부분 문학은 바로 이러한 것들을 예증하기 위해 존재한다고 보았기 때문이다. 문학적 다윈주의는 이와 같이 다윈의 생물학에 기반을 둔 인간 본성에 대한 이해, 다시 말해서 진화 심리학으로 문학 작품을 읽는 것이다.
이러한 문학 연구는 사실상 그 동안 문학 비평계를 주도해 온 포스트모더니즘과 그에서 파생된 이론 중심의 비평, 혹은 그 이전의 주제 중심의 전통적 비평이 추구하던 해석 방식과 확연히 다르다. Carroll에 따르면 포스트모더니즘으로 총괄되는 이론 중심의 비평(여기에는 Freudianism, deconstruction, Foucauldian political criticism, feminism 등이 총망라된다)은 인간의 행동과 인지 활동을 촉발하는 "유전적인, 생물학적으로 강제된 구조"(innate, biologically constrained structure)(214)를 인정하지 않은 우를 범했으며, 전통적 비평은 인간의 본성을 찾으려고 했으나 그것을 보편적단순 원리로 체계화시켜보는 시도가 결여되었다고 지적한다. Jane Austin의 Pride and Prejudice를 진화 심리학으로 해석한 Carroll은 Elizabeth, Darcy, Mrs. Bennet등 주요 인물들의 행동 동기를 재생산(reproduction)의 보편적 원리로 환원한다. Darcy와 Elizabeth의 갈등과 화해는 재생산을 위한 짝짓기 원리로 해석될 수 있으며 딸들의 신분상승과 성공적인 결혼에 대한 Mrs. Bennet의 과도한 강박도 자신의 유전 인자를 보다 많이 산포시키려는 성공적인 재생산의 욕구에서 비롯되었다는 것이다.
이러한 본질주의적, 환원주의적 읽기는 지극히 정교하고 미묘한 문학적 의미를 지나치게 단순화, 개량화할 수 있다. 게다가 The Bluest Eye 처럼 이미 인물들의 행위의 동기가 인종주의와 노예제라는 거대한 사회적 메카니즘에 압도되어 있는 경우 진화 심리학에서 말하는 인간 본성의 시스템이 얼마나 유효하게 적용될 수 있을 지 의문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 본 연구가 진화 심리학으로 TBE를 읽으려고 하는 것은 흑인 문학 연구에 있어 지금까지 해온 근인적 설명(proximal explanation) 외에 궁극적 설명(ultimate explanation)의 가능성을 실험해 보기 위해서이다. 근인적 설명이란 행동의 동기에 대해 즉각적이고 근접한 이유로 설명하는 것이고 궁극적 설명이란 유전적 특질, 혹은 진화론적 양상 등 장기적이고 본질적인 맥락에서 설명하는 것이다.
2. 진화 심리학과 문학적 다윈주의

진화 심리학이란 단순화시켜 말하면 사람의 마음을 Darwin의 진화론으로 읽는 것이다. 동물과 다르지 않게 인간도 진화하며 인간의 마음은 생물학적 진화 과정의 산물이라고 본다. 다시 말해서 인간을 포함한 동물이 생물학적으로 진화해 왔듯이 인간의 마음도 자연선택의 적응과정을 통해 진화해왔으며 앞으로도 진화한다는 논리이다. 진화 심리학을 주도해온 Edward O. Wilson은 우리의 정신 작용--언어, 애타주의, 난교--도 영혼이라기보다 선사시대 때 생존하기 위해 주입된 것이며, 두뇌란 정신 작용을 위해 진화된 분리된 모듈의 집합이라고 한다.
아주 개인의 차이를 인정하지 않는 것은 아니지만 진화 심리학에서는

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Evolutionary psychology is rooted in Darwin's evolutionary theory. It attempts to explain psychological traits--such as memory, perception, or language--as adaptations, that is, as the functional products of natural selection or sexual selection. Literary Darwinism grounded in evolutionary psychology brings literature within the category of cognitive and behavioral features susceptible to an adaptationist understanding and seeks innate patterns of human behavior: parenting( child bearing and rearing), mating( asses and allure sexual partners), survival( avoid predators, efforts to acquire resources), social(competition and cooperation within families and communities), and cognition(story-telling, language).
Reading literature through evolutionary psychology is a ultimate explanation of literature while the politically saturated discourse such as feminism or postcolonialism is an approximate one. While the latter is to explain the immediate and proximate motivation of humans' behavior, the former is to interpret in terms of the long-term and substantial context. This paper is to read Toni Morrison's first novel The Bluest Eye and Ernest Gaines' A Lesson Before Dying through evolutionary psychology. Especially this paper pays attention to how racial and sexual problem embedded in the texts could be interpreted by means of innate patterns of human behavior. For example, TBE and LBD as well as other narratives categorized in 'cognitive behavioral system' follows the cyclical pattern of four seasons, which takes into relief the fact that literature is a product of humans' desire for reproduction. Maladjustment of black characters TBE and LBD represent also can be understood in the context of inclusive fitness pattern. This paper aims to read Pecola's schizophrenia, Cholly's incest, Pauline's abandonment of child rearing, Henry's despair in terms of adoptation mechanism at the risk of oversimplified reductionism.
