A Study on Narrative Structure and Popularity of Korean Detective Narrative - Regarding to the Historical Concept and Applicable Scope of Detective Narrative -.

The final object of this study is to clarify its characteristic through an analysis on the structure of Korean Detective Narrative that was created since from 1980s. And, based on the analyzed contents it intends to elucidate the narrative desire of populace which is accepting in mutually different form according to media. In order to accomplish such purpose, it requires to stipulate the concept of Detective Narrative before anything else and also must be set up obviously its applicable scope thereof. The Detective Narrative instituted as the research object in this study totally includes that of all narrative texts which are accepting or transforming of narrative characteristic of detective story. Accordingly, the Detective Narrative includes not only mystery story but also popular culture such as movie or cartoon. The reason which willing to observe on the Detective Narrative in this study is as followings: Firstly, it is able to overcome the viewpoint of the existing literature study that the popular culture had been excluded from a scholastic study field, through the research on the Detective Narrative. Secondly, the Detective Narrative can be a useful passage that is understandable the relationship between Narrative structure and popularity. Under such recognition, in chapter 2, at first the quest story and the Detective Narrative were compared each other based on Frye's discussion. Through this, the formative background of Detective Narrative in Western Europe was clarified, and it could be confirmed the peculiar characteristic of Korean Detective Narrative which classifies from that of Western Europe. The writers of Korean Detective Narrative, in differently from Western European detective stories, are more concerned in the question such as ‘How the crime was occurred (howdunit)’ or ‘Why the crime was occurred (whydunit)' rather than ‘Who is the Criminal (whodunit)’. As the matter of fact, such discriminative nature of Korean Detective Narrative becomes an important clue for achievement the target of this study. And, in chapter 3 and chapter 4, it has ever examined generally about argumentative problem point of Detective Narrative which should be solved prior to concrete text analysis. In chapter 3, it has quite paid attention to the relationship between narrative structure and popularity which are confirming at the detective story and metaphysical detective story since 1980s. In the texts at this age, the relationship between the said two is exposed as very complicated aspect. In chapter 4, as the Detective Narrative that appearing in mutually different format in accordance with media was examined, this is just the substance to be explained preponderantly in this study. Likely as explained at the modern popular culture theory, Popularity would be elucidated at the dimension of taste. Therefore, in order to comprehend the desire of masses reflected to Detective Narrative, it is certainly inevitable to discuss regarding to medium, the passage that supplying of taste. Even though this may be a brief analysis, the comparison and analysis on Novel <<DMZ>> and Movie <Joint Security Area, JSA> is a fairly good enough example that is able to show how the Detective Narrative is transformed by what form according to the media. Through such analysis, we could understand the characteristic of modern Detective Narrative and the peculiarity of medium at the same time. Detective Narrative is able to be free from the criticism named as a mere popular genre when it accepts the characteristic of medium substantially in the narrative dimension, and also able to reflect masses cultural taste of the same age, additionally.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국 추리서사의 서사성과 대중성(popularity)에 관한 연구
- 추리서사의 사적 개념과 적용 범주에 대하여

이 연구의 최종적인 목표는 1980년대 이후부터 창작된 한국 추리서사(detective narrative)의 구조를 분석하여 그 특성을 밝히는 데 있다. 그리고 그 분석 내용을 바탕으로 해서 매체에 따라 상이한 방식으로 수용되고 있는 대중의 서사적 욕망을 해명하고자 한다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해서는 먼저 추리서사의 개념을 규정하고 그 적용 범위를 분명하게 설정할 필요가 있다. 이 연구에서 연구 대상으로 설정된 추리서사란 추리소설의 서사적 특성을 수용하거나 변용하고 있는 모든 서사 텍스트를 총칭한다. 따라서 추리서사에는 소설뿐만 아니라 영화나 만화와 같은 대중문화도 포함된다. 이 연구에서 추리서사에 주목하고자 하는 이유는 다음과 같은 이유 때문이다. 첫째, 추리서사에 대한 연구를 통해 대중문화를 학문적 연구에서 제외시켜 왔던 기존의 문학 연구 관점을 극복할 수 있다. 둘째, 추리서사는 서사성과 대중성의 관계를 이해할 수 있는 유용한 통로가 될 수 있다. 이러한 인식 하에 2장에서는 먼저 프라이(Frye)의 논의를 바탕으로 해서 탐색담(quest story)과 추리서사를 비교하였다. 이를 통해 서구에서 추리서사의 성립 배경을 밝히고, 서구와 구분되는 한국 추리서사의 독특한 특성을 확인할 수 있었다. 한국 추리서사의 작가들은 서구의 고전적 추리소설과는 달리 ‘누가 범인인가(whodunit)’보다는 '어떻게 범죄가 발생했는가(howdunit)'나 ‘왜 그런 범죄가 발생했는가(whydunit)'라는 질문에 더 많은 관심을 갖는다. 한국 추리서사의 이러한 변별성은 이 연구의 목표를 달성하기 위한 중요한 단서가 된다. 그리고 3장과 4장에서는 구체적인 텍스트 분석에 앞서 해결해야 할 추리서사의 논쟁적 문제점을 개괄적으로 살펴보았다. 3장에서는 1980년대 이후 추리소설과 형이상학적 추리소설에서 확인되는 서사성과 대중성의 관계에 주목하였다. 이 시기 텍스트들에서는 둘 사이의 관계가 매우 복잡한 양상으로 드러난다. 4장에서는 매체에 따라 상이한 방식으로 나타나는 추리서사를 살펴보았는데, 이것은 이 연구에서 중점적으로 해명하고자 하는 내용이다. 현대 대중문화론에서 설명하고 있는 것처럼 대중성은 취향(tatse)의 차원에서 해명된다. 따라서 추리서사에 반영된 대중의 욕망을 이해하기 위해서는 필연적으로 취향을 공급해주는 통로인 매체에 대해 논의하지 않을 수 없다. 비록 간략한 분석이기는 하지만, 소설 <<DMZ>>와 영화 <공동경비구역 JSA>의 비교 분석은 매체에 따라 추리서사가 어떤 방식으로 변형되는가를 보여줄 수 있는 좋은 예이다. 이러한 분석을 통해 우리는 현대 추리서사의 특성과 매체의 특성을 동시에 이해할 수 있었다. 추리서사는 서사적 차원에서 매체의 특성을 충실히 수용하고, 거기에 동시대 대중의 문화적 취향을 반영시킬 수 있을 때, 통속적 장르라는 비판으로부터 벗어날 수 있다.
