The main objective of this manuscript is to consider the emotional significance of a series of civic movements in Japan following the triple disaster compounded by the earthquake, tsunami, and the meltdown of nuclear reactor that occurred in Fukushima on March 11, 2011. The fiasco was not only a natural disaster, but also signified the collapse of the popular belief in Number One Japan, which further precipitated the suspicion about the post-war power structure in Japan. At the same time, it has ironically offered a new ground for civic movements that run counter to the establishment in Japan. The post-March 11 new politics of street, especially anti-nuclear demonstrations that have been taking place in the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office and other public places, are raising serious questions about tabooed problems of the post-war Japanese society. The emotional foundation of the movement is fury, which has been largely suppressed by the establishment since it was regarded as disrupting social harmony. However, it should be noted that fury may serve a constructive function, in that it may give rise to the energy that weakens or subverts the existing institution that keeps reproducing resentment among ordinary Japanese people. I propose that the post-March 11 movement has rece
