국문 초록 (Abstract)

카니의 첫 시집인 『공장에서 부치는 노래』는 공장에서 일하는 노동자가 쓴 시임에도 불구하고 노동자계층의 삶에 관한 묘사가 매우 드믄 반면 중산층 독자들이 선호하는 관념적 세계에 대한 묘사가 더 우세하다. 두 번째 시집인 『공장에서 일하는 소녀의 노래』에서 카니는 정치적 수동성으로 특징되는 중산층 여성의 시적 담론에서 벗어나 당대사회에 대한 통렬한 비판을 가한다. 물질에 대한 탐욕이 당대인들의 삶을 지배하고 있는 점을 지적하면서, 노동자들의 연대에 의한 사회변혁의 가능성과 이에 대한 희망을 외치고 있다. 이것은 카니의 시가 한 개인의 사적 영역에서 벗어나 사회적 영역으로 외연이 확장되고 있음을 의미한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Songs from the Factory, Ethel Carnie’s first book of poetry, lacks the details of working-class life, in spite that it was composed by a working-class woman. Rather, it shows the world that has often been described in middle-class women’s poetry. However, in her second book of poetry, Songs of A Factory Girl, Carnie goes beyond poetic discourses of middle-class women, which are often characterized by their political passivity, and makes a poignant critique of the contemporary society. She points out that people in the contemporary society are obsessed with material gaining and she predicts a possibility for social reforms through the solidarity of working-class people. This means that Carnie’s poetic world is extended from the private to the public.
It is in her third book of poetry, Voices of Womanhood, that Carnie shows most mature poetic achievements. One thing that is pervasive in this book is Carnie’s exploration into the role of women and her self-consciousness about being a working-class woman. In other words, Voices of Womanhood is an exploration into Carnie’s self identity as both a woman and a factory girl.
