아시아계 미국시의 재편성: 캐시 송, 명미 김, 수지 곽 김을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 최근 미국 시단에 이질성과 다양성이라는 변화를 가져온 아시아계 미국시인, 특히 캐시 송, 명미 김, 수지 곽 김의 활동에 주목하면서, 그들의 언어, 문화, 인종, 정체성, 가족, 민족성에 대한 의식을 비교 분석한다. 이 연구는 아시아계 미국시인 1세대, 1.5세대, 2세대 간의 차이, 그리고 이민 1.5세대, 2세대, 3세대 간의 차이라는 문학적, 사회 문화 정치적 관점에서의 논의를 포함한다. 첫째, 󰡔사진 신부󰡕, 󰡔깃발 아래에서󰡕, 󰡔분단국가의 비망록󰡕을 정독하여, 아시아계 미국 여성 시인의 첫 시집의 독특한 성격을 규명한다. 캐시 송, 명미 김, 수지 곽 김은 문화, 정체성, 가족, 지역, 민족성, 언어 등의 문제의식을 공유한다. 소수민족의 시학과 연결된 이질성, 동화, 갈등, 중간적 위치에 대한 미묘한 인식이 최근 미국시 분야에 변화를 가져온 것이다. 둘째, 이들이 공유하는 시각뿐만 아니라, 가족 배경, 이민 시기, 출생 지역, 세대 등의 차이에서 비롯한 언어, 문화, 민족적 경계에 대한 그들의 인식의 차이를 다룬다. 본 연구는 캐시 송, 명미 김, 수지 곽 김을 통해 단순히 민족성과 젠더에 초점이 맞추어졌던 아시아계 미국 여성 시인에 대한 기존의 비평적 견해를 재고하고, 미국시의 보다 넓은 지평에서 언어, 형식, 내러티브의 함의를 탐색해 본다.

This study examines Asian American poet's activities that have contributed to contemporary American poetry's "heterogeneity" and "pluralism," and especially focus on the works of three women poets: Cathy Song (1955- ), Myung Mi Kim (1957- ), and Suji Kwock Kim (1968- ), and compare their poetry in terms of their consciousness of language, culture, ethnicity, family, and nationality. This research also explores differences between the first generation of Asian American poets and the next generation, and difference among "1.5 generation," the second generation, and the third generation of Korean Americans. Thus it includes discussions from literary social, political, and cultural perspectives. First, reading Picture Bride, Under Flag, and Notes from the Divided Country, this study examines the unique characteristics of each volume as the first book of an Asian American woman poet. Cathy Song, Myung Mi Kim, and Suji Kwock Kim seem to share their consciousness of the problems of culture, identity, family, ethnicity, region, and language. Their subtle, complex thoughts about heterogeneity, assimilation, conflict and middle ground which are closely linked with minority's poetics, have brought most compelling aspects to contemporary American poetry. Second, this study discusses not only their shared views but also their differences which I suppose are more interesting. There must be differences among these three poets that came from differences in family backgrounds, time of immigration, birthplace, and generation. Through Cathy Song, Myung Mi Kim and Suji Kwock Kim, this study attempts to expand critical views on Asian American women poets that used to focus merely on ethnicity and gender, and aims to explore the implications of language, form, and narrative on a broader horizon of American poetry.
